New squeeze page trend - Does It really work?

Hi, I have created quite a few squeeze pages for myself (and for other marketers), and I don't know how long people have been doing this...

But recently, I have seen quite a few video squeeze pages that make you opt in before you can even watch the video.

I.e. When you press play, a dialogue box comes up asking you to opt in to watch the video.

My question is, does this actually help with conversions?

Now, I know that the only way to know for yourself is by split testing it, but I'm just curious to know how it has been working for others.

I have seen some squeeze pages that are bullet pointed, and have all the normal text that you would expect to see on a squeeze page, and the video is just a small video above the opt-in box itself.

I would expect that to help conversions. But when it is just a headline, video and opt-in box squeeze page, I would expect it to damage conversions.

Because personally, I have NEVER opted into one of those, because it seems a little rude and arrogant... 'I'm not going to share anything with you until you give me your details'...

I thought this industry was all about sharing value... Fair enough, people need to carry out certain calls to action in order to get certain pieces of information. But it's not cool to withhold EVERYTHING until the call to action is carried out...

What do you guys think?

Isaac

  • Quite frankly, I dont think that all these super fancy stuff makes that much of a difference.

    As long as...

    1) Your incoming traffic is targeted,

    2) Your freebie is perceived as "valuable" by your visitors,

    3) and your squeeze page design makes sense...

... your opt-in ratios will be high.

No need to re-invent the wheel or to fix what's never been broken.

I agree... I've been able to get some pretty high conversion rates, even with the OLD, perhaps boring squeeze pages. It's all psychology really, because you have to know who your market are. But as Coby said, some stuff works in other niches that doesn't work so well in IM any more... Possibly because we're used to seeing the same stuff.

Thanks for all your replies though guys.

If what you are sharing is of true value then I don't think there is anything wrong with asking for an email at first. If they don't want to optin then that is their choice - at least you will only end up with people who are genuinely interested in what you have to offer.

These squeeze pages you are talking about with the 'video fake out' that opens a small dialogue box were made popular a year or so ago by well known IM marketers Ryan Deiss and Perry Belcher. If you know anything about these guys you will know they run a multi million dollar information business where they sell to loads of different markets outside of IM AND they are fanatical testers.

I remember reading the report where Ryan said they tested both ways, a reverse squeeze page like you are talking about and the video fake out squeeze page, and the second one performed a lot better. Obviously you need to test this for yourself with your own market however I do know they tested this in a range of different markets and found it to out perform most times.

Never make a marketing decision based on what YOU do or do not like - it's not important. The only thing that matters is what works best with the majority of your market.

Totally, yeah... That's why I asked, and I said that you obv need to test stuff before you can make a decision. It's obviously gotta be successful in some cases, otherwise people wouldn't be using it, especially not guys like Ryan Deiss and Perry Belcher...

But thanks for the info, I will deffo have to try these kinds of pages out on some of my sites =).

So yeah, even if it did lower conversion rates a little by repelling people like me, at least it would increase the value of the people who did opt in...

It depends on a lot of things. Whats on the video that has the pause button? If its someone interested with making money from clickbank it better be a nice screen shot of those green and tan bars filled to the max. Anything that directs the user to opt in is going to convert better then something that does not. I have seen and used a number of banners that show click here to play buttons that look like youtube and it does end up converting a little bit better then standard banners. It is a bit deceptive, more like a gray area you need to play around with. Again always think about who your target audience is and what they are used to and not used to.

I have never opted into lists with those types of videos either. I prefer the ones you talked about with the bullet points and the video. I hate it when you try to watch the video and they make you opt-in.

I like the method where you can give away some valuable info, but have them opt-in to "get the whole story"...

But I think when done right you could make this method convert higher, like it was said above, it all depends on your market and audience. The same method might work like crazy in a niche outside of IM. Often times, stuff that doesnt work as well anymore in the IM niche still works like mad in other niches because the people aren't used to see this type of stuff all the time.

Just have to find something that fits your style and test to see what works best.
