What to do when your blog hits a traffic "plain"?

Hi all,

There are not more things that are more annoying than a traffic plain. Under a "plain" I mean: you are trying to increase traffic, but you can't. This happened to me, as you can see from my stats:

But then as you can see my traffic numbers came to a big growth. So how did I do this? It's very easy:

1. Try to find the reason.
Look back and try to figure out the cause of this happening. Maybe there were holidays in the past months? If no, then look at your subscribers number. Did it drop significantly? If no, then leap forward to the next step.

2. Don't stop promoting...
Use forums (like warriorforum.com and forums.digitalpoint.com) and don't forget about social media. I did this and as you can see on the image, it worked. I basically use Facebook (127,510,914 unique visitors/month) and Twitter (27,985,892 unique visitors/month).
These social networking sites can create nice traffic spikes for your site.
But when struggling with a this kind of problem, you are fighting for each pageview. So also use LinkedIn (16,439,724 unique visitors/month), MySpace (43,601,320 unique visitors/month) and Hi5 (1,818,099 unique visitors/month).
These are also good to get a steady flow of traffic.

Well if I could sum up this in a phrase, I would say this: "Rinse and repeat"

I hope this will help when you are stuck with the same problem.
Did this happen to you before? What did you do?

Have a nice day.

The traffic plain happens because of two main issues.First the keyword you targeted get less searches this month. And the google algorithmic changes. But most importantly the aged sites always get back the traffic after some time.Your ideas are good though.Promotion is very important.

Don't forget about other traffic generation models such as article marketing, press releases, etc.

What you need more than spike traffic is traffic that is sold on you and your blog. Article marketing is very good at convincing people to trust in your point of view.

Not only will that drive more spikes of traffic to your blog, it will also deliver more users who come back, because they are interested in what you have to say.

Absolutely... and to add onto the advice that Bill's already given you, do some guest blogging. It's a great way to reach people that are already interested in your niche. All you have to do is publish something great enough so that they're interested in what YOU have to say.

Thanks for replying. Guest blogging is also good. Once I got 67 visitors/day from one guest post.

to analyze the causes of the "plain" i suggest to compare the plain period to another period in google analytics, so you can understand little bit more about traffic...

analyze the page loading time with google webmaster tools for that period, maybe you had some hosting problem...

Thanks for your reply. What did you use? Digg or StumbleUpon?
(I use mostly Digg and it works well for me too)
