My Passion, my curse??

I've been running a blog for about two years now that started as a love of labor and continues out of stubbornness. Over the past few months my site has been under assault by Google (or my lack of understanding of Google's 1000 commandments).

First After upgrading my theme, getting accepted into Google News, and seeing my traffic explode over night, I get me Adsence Account revoked because a friend on mine was clicking on the ads without my knowledge. He thought he was helping me out but didn't tell me until after I appealed. DENIED!!

Afterwards I go on a writing storm and with the help of a few writers put out over 40 articles of the highest quality but the traffic just doesn't grow. My intent was to get my traffic up to a level where I could get premium ads for my site and not rely on PPC. But like I said the traffic never materializes.

Then, according to Google's "this site is dangerous page" my site gets Malware, presumably from some hacked Clickbank ads I used to replace the Adsence. It was down for a week but I did recover the site. However, now I'm afraid to put ads on my site! I guess its just post-Google paranoia but it does complicate the plan of making money with this site.

Enter Warrior Forum: After reading many post doing lots and lots of research I realize my traffic building efforts are horribly off, no news letter, forums non existent, hardly any SEO and I learn that I am sitting on a gold mine of articles that can be used to get more traffic with back linking and article syndication. Then Google comes out with the change and now I'm not sure if this helps or hurts me.

I just enjoy writing on my topic and it would be so incredibly nice to have this site make money but from what I can tell, most money making niches have to do with demand and keyword loopholes. Or if I can put out 5 articles a day my traffic would grow a lot but then I might drop dead from exhaustion.

I've always thought that success in any business comes from a desire to do what you really love and eventually it will pay off but there is a practical side of me that thinks that if I am going to make money with a blog, I may need to change my topic or try to sell something people have a demand for.

So my question is this; Do I stick with the blog and if so what is the best way to monetize a high quality content site (3-5 articles a week) in a mega competitive niche? Will better SEO make that much of a difference? OR do I need to find a less competitive niche if I ever want to earn any money?

Thanks in advance!

I love the tags, and that's quite a story!

I guess my first question would be, what sort of level of success are you getting right now? Are you seeing any traffic? Does it all come from Google? Is it monetisable?

How you monetise it will depend on the topic - but have you tried looking at affiliate programmes? If you're doing stuff like product reviews, or writing about something tangible that people can buy then affiliate links can sometimes produce a higher return than stuff like Adsense.

There are lots of ways to make blogging work and make money, but it can be a long hard slog. It sounds like you've got the stubbornness for it - which is where most bloggers fail - so maybe with a little bit of tweaking and online-marketing savvy, and a lot of reading, you could take it a long way...

But be aware that any site that relies on 100% on traffic from Google is a site that's at risk at any time. Explore other forms of traffic generation, build a strong regular readership, collect email address, provide RSS feeds, get involved in Twitter. You need traffic coming from as diverse a range of sources as you can get.

My traffic is about 50-100 views a day but if I get out an article that connects I get get up to 2,500 views in one day. Most of the traffic is from organic search and Google News. People do read my articles but they are not related to any product. I guess this is more a PPC setup.

Thanks for the tips, I would love to hear more about Adsense alternatives.

Helping or building blogs for others was something I had not thought of! Thanks!

if you really believe you could establish yourself as an authority in the niche, you have some chance with a blog. otherwise, i would avoid it.

I have credentials, I know what I'm talking about, and I have a passion for the topic but it seems that establishing myself as an authority has more to do with a strategy itself. I would like to know more about that!

I think I found a way to do both "my passion" and make it work earning at least enough to break even, possibly profit. I still have to test the idea and it may take up to 2 or 3 months but I think it's important enough to try. I will post my results here. Stay posted if any one interested. I would like to hear all your feedback!

Keep trying! There is nothing more rewarding than doing your passion and your business altogether. Its not too late yet and its not a curse. Its just a matter of time before you figure out that your blog is all worth the effort.

Have you tried applying to CPM networks? They pay per thousand impressions and often times you can get between $3 and $4 per CPM. Of course there are plenty of networks that pay much less, but its a great way to start earning some income with your site.

Also. Register a business name and get a PO Box and then try re-applying to Adsense. Not a guarantee but it might work to get you back in.

You're going to fail. If you're afraid of failure then you do not belong in the Internet Marketing Business. Period.

      Thanks BloggingPro,

Yes, I have read that setting up a business and getting an EIN number was a way to get a new Adsense account but to be honest, until I figure out how to make something work for sure I'm going to leave Adsence alone. Google seems like they change their rules a little too randomly for a noob like me to build a biz off of.

I have heard of the CPMs but honestly not enough to actually implement one. I guess the question would be could I find one that has ads relevant to my content? Any suggestions? Have you used any in the past? What was your experience like? THX

Yeah, after many upgrades and SEO changes traffic has gone up but no PPC revenue to speak of. I think my topic is too broad and competitive or people just aren't in buying mode when the come to site like mine. I'm pretty close to pulling the pfoit plug on this and just making this a hobby site. It's a shame to waste a site hooked up in Google News though. If I do another site similar to this one, I will have to start from scratch. at least I have learned a few things.

Thanks to all for your posts!
