It depends on your niche really ... I personally have seen an increase in sales from professional looking webpages rather than ordinary websites with only text...

It can help for some markets, in others it might decrease your conversions. Your sales message and design needs to be congruent with your main storyline.

An example might be someone who is trying to brand themselves as just the guy next door who doesn't know a thing about computers but stumbled across secret xyz. If he uses flashy graphics and video then it is not really congruent with the story he is trying to sell.

No one can say for sure which will work best for you and your market. Think about things logically and imagine what your customers would expect to see given the background they know about you.

This will only help to give you a starting point. You should always test the two types against one another to find out for sure which converts best with your market.

You might be interested in checking out this great article by Glen from ViperChill.com (and on the WF too) - http://www.viperchill.com/squeeze-page-optimisation/. It covers some metrics and an example of his graphically pleasant squeeze page he used with great results.

I did come across a video of Frank Kern and a bloke he works with which talked about the improvements some simple graphical changes made to conversion rates.

It really does depend on the niche but the MMO niche is very conditioned to squeeze pages and ugly ones at that. A professional looking page might make a huge difference to a general consumer though.

I just took a quick look at that page you recommended. In it the guy says...

"In most industries, a 10% conversion rate on a squeeze
page is considered to be phenomenal. So, to reach a 64%
conversation rate is simply unheard of."
I'm not sure where he is getting his figures from. I would never accept a 10% conversion rate on a squeeze page and anyone getting figures THAT low must be doing something drastically wrong. Seriously.

And with good targeted traffic and a good offer, getting anywhere in the 50 - 70% range is not really overly difficult. It just takes a little testing and tweaking. A lot of the pre-qualifying should be done through your ads or whatever other methods you are using to get people to the page.

Most of my squeeze pages will start off around the 40-50% mark and I will tweak them up from there.

The squeeze page this guy used, I imagine, would only work well on certain offers like the ones he is promoting. Offers where you get regular updates of information. Why? Everyone is so used to seeing this same design on all the group coupon sites that send daily updates.

For more traditional giveaways like free reports and videos in the MMO market I don't think his results would be as good. But he has done things correctly. He has tested a different method that suits his particular market which is what we should all do - he just has his figures a little jumbled up.
