Facebook page likes: the new email list?

So, I've hearing some thoughts about, but I can't seem to find anything dedicated on this matter.
Many people believe that having a number of likes on FB is as useful or sometimes even better than having the same number of addresses in your list. Facebook is obviously going to become more and more the main focus for many of us, but it seems hard for me to believe that 30k people in your page are more useful than 30k people in your list.
What's your opinions on this?

If you have the option to choose between 30k on an email list and 30k on a facebook fan page, then the email list is the option. However, it's becoming harder and harder as the days go by to build a good list for free anyway. Facebook can be a good option, but don't expect to be a marketer on there. I tried building a group on there a few months ago. I had 5000 people, sent out one email to people promoting a product and my account got banned. Facebook doesn't like anyone that uses their "free" site for marketing. They only want you to spend thousands of dollars for their ads.

I don't think people are saying you should have one or the other. I think the safest and most effective way is to have both. Try and get your Facebook fans on to your email list and try and get your email subscribers to be fans of your Facebook page.

That way you can hit your subscribers from multiple angles making every promotion you send out a lot more effective. By integrating Facebook into things it also allows your list to grow naturally over time.

I would take 30k email list but having a 30k fan page would be great to build your list because what you post on your fan page could get viral very quickly

Get a 30k fan page, send traffic to a squeeze page and build a list. People on facebook are not in buying mood. If you get their email address you can get them out of that FB mood by email.

I run an ecommerce site and i've recently been building my facebook page. I used my e-mail list of over 8000 customers to send traffic to the new page.

I find facebook has a great advantage over e-mail in it's frequency of communication. If you send your list an e-mail every day they're gonna get pissed pretty quickly. If you post on your wall every day that's fine.

It's so gratifying to post a product on the wall and see and order come in off the back of it. Your fans will often comment to say they've ordered - fantastic tracking!

I agree that you can write a wall update far more often than you can send an email, but don't forget that the percentage of people that will see your page update is far smaller than those who will see the email.
Also, by posting to your page comes another concern, that I can't seem to find a good answer. Is it allowed to promote products there or not? I know that the usual answer is that we shouldn't overdo it, but I've heard of cases that people were banned from FB just because they advertised something.

I think having a list on Facebook is just another way of gathering an audience of which you can influence and send offers to, as we all know the internet changes rapidly and this is just another way smart marketers are changing with the times and adapting to the environment. just my 2 cents
