Got an email today from a mom desperate to hurry up and make some money online. This breaks my heart because I've been there. When my infant son was diagnosed with RSV 9 years ago, I knew I HAD to stay home but didn't know how I would make ends meet - we needed two incomes!

I had never heard of Internet marketing. I found Elance through a link on eBay that said, "Services." Just happened to click it. Once I'd been hired by some well-known marketers to ghostwrite some niche products like about parenting and such, they asked me to learn Internet Marketing so I could write on that topic, which set me apart since most writers didn't know the topic.

I was lucky.

Making money online takes time. It's not overnight. Is it possible to make money in 24 hours? Yes. I do it all the time. But for someone not yet making money, it's a BIG gamble to suddenly quit a 9-5 job and take up Internet marketing when you're worried about how you're gonna pay the electric bill or put food on your table.

I say - get a job!

There's nothing wrong with waiting tables or being a clerk at the Container store part time to stay afloat while you learn the ropes. Your family (and you) are your #1 priority. Don't wait until the bill collectors are already beating down your door to go get a job as a last resort - don't even let it get to that point!

Have money coming in and build your business with peace of mind. Yes, it may take longer but you know what? Whenever I'm pressed for time and know I only have a few - maybe 2 hours a day to work - it makes me work harder than when I sit at my computer all day knowing I have the luxury of working when I want to.

Be smart about this - not desperate. I want you to build your business with a clear head and not make rash decisions on what to pursue because you think it'll have the fastest payoff for you.

Your damn right! A bit of manual labour never hurt anyone! Who cares that the job you have to take to pay the bills isn't "what you wanted to do with your life". After all, it's just so that you are able to pay the bills until you learn about the world of online business and internet marketing and are able to make money from that isn't it?!

If you find yourself in the situation Tiffany describes here, Is uggest you folow her advice and get a part-time job. This will help you pay the bills and will give you some extra money to put towards your own online business.

working online in any manner is not an over night process. it never will be. It is possible to hustle, but desperation is not the best motivator in any business.

Tiffiany you are so on the nose w/ this! thank you for sharing this, and reminding people of the business nature of IM and the related services.

I painted curbs for several weekends this summer (single dad, bills have to be paid).

The biggest challenge with a "real job" is to keep using a percentage of your "free" time on IM. It's easy to start feeling as if there aren't enough hours in the day.
    {{ DiscussionBoard.errors[312366].message }}
  • It's because there aren't enough hours in the day.

    I mostly agree with you.

It's like a roulette table, except you can control how it spins.

If you are going to make the plunge, you better have resources saved up, or one hell of a motivational work ethic, with a solid business plan that you personally know can work.

A lot of success stories involve people making major, overnight philosophy and
life changes. You hear about people quitting their CEO jobs for more freedom and then scraping by for a few years, only to pull it together in the end.

You hear about people living on the streets and using spare change they find for internet time at a local cafe or library.

You hear all the time how people just took that first risk, and are now more successful because of it.

You know what you DON'T hear very much?

People that played it safe, and smart from the beginning. There is such a beast as a "safe risk taker", regardless of what any hot shot wants to tell you.

People that got an education, did other ventures part time, and moved over when the time was right.

People that took care of things the right way, from the beginning.

It's very interesting to me. Look at your local demographics, and the range of incomes near your area, or your state.

You'd be SHOCKED to find out how many millionaires are out there.

Money isn't real, George. It doesn't matter. It only seems like it does.

I'm always saying that desperate people make desperate (usually bad) decisions. I'm all for part-time work to keep the basics covered. Me, I used to be pro ballet dancer and now I teach part-time in the evenings for a good hourly wage. Trouble is, with a 5 month old baby, I can't teach as much as before!

To keep from feeling and acting desperate, I look at what's going right and remind myself that, just like getting a job as a dancer, I just have to stay in the game, do my best, and keep learning.

Things are getting better and I have learned so much over the past several years. I think the hardest part is that there is no formal training in this business. At least with dance there is a basic foundation that you are guaranteed to get if you go to a good school for 8-10 years! But then, I guess it took 200 years for such a training system to emerge!

    Tiffany,

You are so right on with this.

I am a big proponent of "making the leap" from being employed to building a business...but only if you're prepared to do it.

I especially liked the part where you mention starting a business with a "clear head"...with no rash decisions.

Granted, there are many stories of those with "their backs against the wall" who used that as motivation to get started quicker...but you have to draw the line somewhere.

    Excellent post Tiffany.

Tiffany you raised an awesome point.

I work full-time on top of running my online business, which I just started taking seriously and I'm ready to get a part time job so I could regain my financial stability and start outsourcing parts of my business that I won't have time for once I start a second job.

I'm learning that sometimes you have to swallow your pride if you want to make your dreams come true, and at this point in my life, I'm ready to make a lot of sacrifices to make it to the IM promised land lol

      Tiffany, you are so right.

For people who are desperate for money, they need to focus on something that can bring in immediate results.

Writing is an excellent way to do this (as you know!), and there are others.

Once you get started making money online, you can always branch out - but it is impossible to make money online when your electricity is shut off.

Sooo true! It actually works against you if you are worried about having enough money to pay the bills. There is nothing wrong with working a job while you build your business. Just as long as you don't get too comfy at the job (steady paycheck) that you slack on making your dreams come true!
