Blog on Website Vs new URL

Assuming you are trying to make some money, is it better to set up your blog in a subfolder on your website or at a new url?

If the blog is to be part of the website and about the same thing, then I would put it as part of the current website rather than as a new domain. Some choose to use a new domain for their blog, but I prefer having them together. You would just install the blog in a sub folder, like soandso.com/blog ...

Is the blog relevant to the website? If not, I would set up a new domain name, especially if you are trying to make money based on organic traffic. If you put a blog about hair care products on a domain that has to do with selling cars, that doesn't make too much sense. Plus, you'll have more freedom with choosing a domain name that caters to what you are trying to sell, service you are trying to push, etc.

What I have done is make the blog my home page but if your site fits well with a blog attach then just attach it as another page.

I installed the blog to my website in a folder and publish all my articles to my blog. I think if the blog is relevant to your website install it to a sub directory. The blog should give you a boost in the serps if you put out fresh content.

If it is in the same niche as the website, just put it on the website.
but if it's another niche => other URL

I would have to think about how big your foundation website is going to be and how big the blog is going to be. If the foundation website ends up being over 100 articles, it has a good amount of content to create that authority feeling. In this case, you could set up the blog on a different URL under a different class C ISP.

If the foundation website was on a micro niche that really could only have 10 articles, then I would put the blog on the site. Larger site...more chances for intersite linking (has always helped my SE rankings)...etc.

I would prefer the two different large sites. You can get double the benefit with out having to do double the work...only like 1.3 times the work. Everytime you write an article, you really just have to either rewrite the material for site 2 or write something highly related for the easy traffic transfer. Two easily ranked domain keywords instead of one. Two guest post opportunities....two pen names for helping each sites "authority" out.

If you decide to split it into two sites, leave comments open for visitors on your foundation site. As long as you are sending it consistent targeted traffic, you will get commentors...this eliminates or at least hinders the lack of fresh content.

I start out in a niche with the site and blog combined. As I get a consistent traffic flow, I start separating the blog from the authority foundation website. I'm sure you can have just as much success with only one site all the way through. I just like the extra search engine traffic.

A blog and a website is the same thing, but a blog has a different format and the search engines tend to like blogs more than websites.

Blogs and websites are similar but Blogs are better for SEO. I think there is no point in wasting money if the blog is relevant to the domain name or topic of the site.
