Google has been on the war path lately. With sites ranging from article directory giant EzineArticles.com to the tiny one page blogs. And that's fine, it's their party.

But why do they continue to be so secretive? It's always this cat and mouse game Internet marketers are forced to play to stay in the Google game. Much like a James Bond spy movie, where clams and counter-claims are constantly thrown around.

Google always feels the need to stay one step ahead of Internet Marketers like we're the criminals. Yet we invested in them when people were still saying "Google who? Or what's a Google?" Is there memories that short? I'm not saying internet marketers made them, but we put money where our mouth was early in the game ... when no one else dared to!

So, will Google ever love the internet marketer again or will they keep giving us the "let just be friends" speech, until we finally go away.

What makes you think that Google doesn't like internet marketers? Google is just trying to give you the best search results. If that means craptacular articles and websites get slapped then so be it.

You realize that if we didn't write craptacular articles and websites we wouldn't have anything to worry about? Not to toot my own here, but ALL of my websites have 100% original content on them. Written by me and probably scrapped a million times by now by those too lazy to write.

I didn't drop at all in the search engines with the last update. I gained positioning or stayed in roughly the same spot. I take pride in these sites. I set up a solid foundation and its proved itself that it can weather the storm.

Even then I realize that nothing last forever. That is why I've begun to set up Facebook fan pages and increased my forum marketing efforts. For two of my sites I actually get MORE traffic from these sources than I do from Google.

    Adapt. Change. Plan-ahead.

You're going to fail. If you're afraid of failure then you do not belong in the Internet Marketing Business. Period.

Thanks, you made some good points, but I wouldn't say EzineArticles.com only had Crap-taculare articles and they got hit hard recently. My only issue is why all the secrecy? I'd want my customers to know what pleases me if I wanted a harmonious relationship, right?

But with Google it seems after you find out what Google wants, they change it and kick you in the rear-end for not knowing? That's what I don't get.

I don't have any problem playing by their rules, but they always forget to let people know when the rules change. Next they penalize or even kick you out of the game for not knowing. That's not nice.

            Googles rules are really simple...

Create good sites that people want to see and they will eventually find you and list you

anything you do above that is gaming the system, which puts you in the firing line.

good quality relevant content, and domain name longevity are all you need

yes it might take a couple of years to make page one doing that. but when you do, you will never be effected by changes...

Trying to jump the Q infront of better long term sites by trying to do clever SEO means you will always be susceptable to log changes and be forever getting kicked.

I very rarely look at my google placement because i dont care, there are plenty of other long term traffic sources out there that take time to grow and come to fruition but again once they do they arent effected by a 3rd party

You know what if i had a magic wand the first thing i would make dissappear is all search engines

Ezine got nailed because it had crap content. I'm not saying it was ALL totally worthless, but it had its fair share. I mean honestly did all of you article marketers think that the well wasn't going to run dry?

I also wouldn't say Google is as secretive as you make it seem. Yes, they don't share with us exactly how their algo's work (but some of their patents do). Why should they? What makes any of us think ranking in Google for our keywords is supposed to be easy?

Google is simply trying to create better and more relevant search results, even more-so now with Microsoft's seemingly bottomless pit of money they are throwing at advertising Bing.

Like I said previously, if you provide great original content (i.e. it makes sense and is relevant to your site) you will be perfectly fine. I'm not trying to argue with you in the slightest but its amazing how many marketers are on fire over this algo-change.

Simply start creating quality content and sites. Is it harder? Your damn straight is. But where does it say running a business (online or offline) is easy?

I dont think Google tries to give its users the best results at all. You only have to look at Google instant and you get irrelevent results. How is irrelevant best?

As has already been said - google just wants to deliver the best results possible.

it just so happens that many internet marketing affiliate sites SUCK and I'm glad to see these sites getting knocked the hell back. as somebody who always tries to write worthwhile content i'm glad to say a couple of my sites have risen (albeit only slightly).

If they wnat to deliver the best possible results then theyre doing a terrible job at it. They hate intertent markertters thata a cat. If tyo try to advertise on adwords they banm you and make you fell like a criminal even thouht you didnt do nothing wrong. I think their next steep is to deindex any website with an affiliaet link. I might be wriong but it could happen.

        Think about it.

If a user is seeking information on a product do they want to send them to a reputable, unbias resource that has spent years building authority or do they want to send them to a fly-by-night poorly designed affiliate site that just wants to make a sale.

you have to bridge the gap between being an affiliate and being a REAL resource. I am assuming you have yet to do this, otherwise you would not be complaining.

I understand that they have to write algorithms that everyone has to abide by, but at the same time for them to destroy multi million dollar legit businesses is a whole different issue. They do have to make a one size fits all way to sort everything and it ends up hurting a lot of businesses that are playing by their rules.

The long and short of it is that, yes I agree that they are happy to be friends if you play by their rules.

I don't claim to be Google's number one fan, but you can't blame them for being secretive about the exact methods they use to determine their search rankings.

They've had to wage a constant war against those who'd seek to game the system for their own ends; countering keyword spamming, invisible text, link farming, spun-to-death content... the list goes on. No sooner is an algorithmic change announced or suspected than someone comes up with a method claiming to exploit a new loophole.

In such an ongoing arms race, some innocents are, inevitably, going to suffer collateral damage. For any marketer potentially affected, the best course of action would be to diversify your traffic sources and reduce your dependency on the performance of one search engine.

    Google is not the problem.

The problem is - you think it's a game and you're trying to play it.

Your marketing changing based on what Google does is the reason why you're getting stung.

Stop chasing Google and start chasing your customers and your problems will go away.

I agree that google has just been way to mean lately to all of us! I don't see how its a problem and how they always must change algorithms.
