Twitter is a must have. It is a great introduction tool and once you get them in, shuffle them off to where you want them

I doubt you can rely on twitter for some huge traffic. But surely good for spreading the name of your website. Worth going for it.

I think Twitter is an extremely valuable tools if used correctly.

They key to using any social media marketing is building your brand by providing value, and throwing in the occasional commercial message using a soft-sell approach.

Here is a Twitter strategy that I just started using a few days ago which is free and targeted. I have been getting between 80-130 new followers per day as a result.

Step One: Identify the keywords which are relevant to your target market.

Step Two: Go to "search.twitter (dot) com" and type in one of your keywords. This will search for and find the most recent Twitter posts which contain this keyword.

Step Three: Click on the username of one of the individuals who sent the tweet. What you are looking for to determine if you want to follow this individual is the following:

    a. Do they have a profile picture?

    b. Have they completed their bio, and do they fit within your niche?

    c. Have they changed the default Twitter background?

    d. Are their tweets purely promotional, or is there any substance? Hint: You want substance.

    e. How frequently do they tweet? Hint: You want the most active Twitter users.

    Step Four

Look at their followers by clicking on the "Followers" link. Here you are looking for people who are relevant to your niche. To do this, hit "Ctrl F" on your keyboard, and type in your keyword. Then scroll through this list of followers, and start following them by applying the steps outlined above in (a) to (e).

    Step Five

Now we wait for 12-24 hours for these people to follow us back. Believe me, it will happen.

Of course, if someone doesn't follow you back within this time period, you don't want to follow them. I will outline how you identify and remove them in Step Six below.

    Step Six

Go to "dossy(dot)org/twitter/karma/", and hit the "Sign in with Twitter" button. "Allow" this application to access your Twitter account. You will then be taking back to the website, at which time you will hit "Whack". This will take you to a page where you will see all of the people in your Twitter network.

At the top of the page you will see "Sort by: Last updated", which you want to keep, and "Show: All". You want to change this to "Show: Only Following". This will reveal to you all of the people who you are following, who are not following you back.

Scroll to the bottom of the page, and you will see the least active Twitter users. Under their avatars, you will see a link which says "unfollow". Start clicking these links one by one, and work your way up. This will automatically unfollow the people who are not following you. If one of them starts following you in the future, you can just follow them back.

One of the keys to this strategy is identifying people on Twitter within your niche who have a lot of followers. You want to make a note of these people, check their follower lists daily, and repeat this strategy.

Also, I am in the Central Time Zone in the USA. I find that this strategy works best when I implement it at night before I got to bed.

My Twitter name is @brianlett. If you look at my followers, you will see that most of them have the term "market" in their bios. This is because I search for users with this term in their bio due to the fact that it is relevant to "marketer" and "marketing", which is my niche.

Last Monday I had less than 79 followers. As right now, I have 542 followers using this strategy. There are some other strategies which I am going to implement as well, in the future, and I will discuss them here in a separate post to give you some feedback.

Hopefully all of this will help someone out as it is a completely free, completely effective strategy.

    Brian

    Thank you Robert

Once you start, it only takes about another 20 minutes or so a day. The key is that you are qualifying your followers, and connecting with other people who understand how Twitter works as a marketing tool.

Yesterday I had a great one-on-one phone conversation with a lady who followed me as a result of my using this method, and requested a meeting. It turns out that she is the Vice-President of a company who is interested in collaborating on a project with me.

Warriors, please do not forsake Twitter. It is an outstanding marketing tool for building your personal brand.

Okay, I'll take another position here ... Twitter may or may not be worth your time as it all depends on if people in your niche actually *use* Twitter.

In some cases, I would ask if they had *heard* of Twitter .

In my case, most of the people have heard of twitter, but they certainly don't use it. So it is not worth my time to get more involved with it.

But this is something only you with your knowledge of your niche can decide.

You can also go down the list as above without bothering about keywords. Simply examine the last message to see whether it is relevant to your niche. If it isn't, ignore it and continue on.

This way you pick up many that are in harmony with what you are providing but who are not necessarily using one of your keywords. You also get a 'feel' for whether there is a real person behind the message or whether software is in control.

A useful check on relevance is to browse through the messages that are being received in your timeline and visit those accounts with promotional messages to see how often they send you messages that aren't of interest to you. Unfollow those who regularly send you messages that are promotional or unrelated to your niche.

This way you 'shape' your list according to your own interests and the people are more interesting to deal with.

Twitter is worth any time you are going to invest tweeting but you have to use the right keywords that relates to the businesses you are promoting and be able to follow the leaders in such niches.

Doing this will give you the opportunity of seeing many that wants what your businesses offer.

Another tool that I use, which cuts down on the time spent on Twitter, is socialoomph.com, which is free. Like vicone, I set my Tweets up in the evening and set them up for 24 hours ahead of time, 2-3 posts per hour. It keeps my Twitter account active and since I have so many little "tweetlets," it doesn't seem like I'm repeating myself too often.

I also take time to browse through the tweets of those who I'm following to reply/RT interesting posts.

Twitter is used heavily in the wedding and party industry and I'm noticing a good bit of new traffic coming directly from Twitter, so for me, it's well worth the effort I'm putting into it.

    Thanks again for this post!

I have been using twitter for about a year and a half. This traffic is poor when it comes to conversions. Yes it can generate traffic to your site or affiliate offers but these people are not what I would call buyer traffic. Also a lot of twitter is being overtaken by BOTS. These BOTs are not real people tweeting but automated programs that post their tweets. So who is really reading your tweets?? BOTS don't read they just post.

I have 21,000 followers and on any given tweet I get on avg. 40 - 60 clicks to an article or video. On Mar. 11th I got 120 when I tweeted Japan Tsunami Video.

Like I said you will get traffic but does it convert is my question. I have been tweeting for 1.5 years now and this traffic rarely converts. I think it is because most of the traffic is from the UK. This traffic does not work especially for US based CPA offers. You would have to join a UK based CPA network to make CPA work for you on Twitter. I use Twitter primarily to boost my youtube video views which works nicely. Howvever, if you are looking for buyers you will be disappointed.

I rarely tweet offers only articles and videos so it's hard to say. My guess is that unless you have fans as followers your conversion will be miniscule.

    This is backwards, IMO.

Twitter is supposed to be how you become more engaged with the traffic and prospects you already have.

Essentially, it's how you turn your cold prospects into warm prospects and your warm prospects into hot prospects.

But it really isn't very good at turning strangers into prospects. It can be done, but it's tremendously inefficient.

all great comments here - when i first got on the twitter bandwagon, i followed some of the foolish IM advice with these automated follow- unfollow tools and whatnot. Ended up with 1000s of people doing the same thing who all tweet stuff but never read anybody else's tweets. Like a shouting match where everyone has earplugs on.

Some good suggestions - like offer value 80%+ of the time with your tweets and toss in a promo here and there, but what i've found in my own experience is this tactic has been a time waster.

Using bit.ly to monitor clicks, I used to get about .1% to 0.5% CTR. I turned off the auto follow feature and started removing tweeters who had no profile image or hadn't tweeted in months/years, etc. Now if I use a bit.ly link I see nothing at all on an account that has a few 1000 followers.

I think iff you don't actively engage others who are also interested in communicating vs. just broadcasting, then it's a time waster. Unless of course you are already a celebrity or person of significance.
