what to do when Filipinos do this?

I notice when I am interviewing a new Filipino worker they will often send me a random smiley face in mid conversation.

example that just happened:

[8:02:36 PM] Me: please message me when you are done rewriting the article on this page
[8:02:53 PM] Filipino: alrightie
[8:03:01 PM] Me: Thanks
[8:03:05 PM] Filipino: : will you be stayin online?
[8:03:07 PM] Filipino: : yw
[8:03:15 PM] Me: Yes, I will be here when you are finished
[8:03:43 PM] Filipino: : alright
[8:03:46 PM] Filipino: :

this makes things a bit awkward for me because I'm not sure what to do next; I usually just try and keep a professional conversation with employees. Am I being offensive by not smiling back?

    No. Your not being offensive.

This is a situation where you "feeL" professionalism doesn't require smiley faces. It's a moot point, but, the information age generation was brought up on smiley faces, instant messenger, and short code for language (ie: lol, wtf, etc).

You need to judge an individual about the quality of their work & the content of their character. This person may be feeling good that he is in an interview & ready, willing & able to put forth good work.

    Don't be so cynical.

I wouldn't feel awkward about it nor would I feel a need to send one back. He may just be letting you know he's happy with the situation or he's trying to be pleasant.

      It's only a smilie - not a frownie.:p (couldn't resist)

I am a Filipino and I do not use such most of the times. But anyway, if you feel like you don't want to say something, then be yourself. Sometimes, it's just an acknowledgment that they are still there on the other side, or just wanted to break the gap of silence. Philippines is a country with millions of cellphone users and before this smileys thing used in online chat, it was already widely used on text messages. These smileys is becoming a part of mannerism, also the sms-style writing that sometimes, you receive an email message with sms format of writing.. LOL

It's not a big deal.. don't get offended or mocked. Filipinos always wearing happy faces...

    Smile back. Simple.

Too much smileys on a conversation is kind of a habit by most of us Filipinos. It's the same kind of mannerisms the Japanese have, who tend to bow down too much on a video chat.

        Exactly.

I am literally stunned to learn it's an ethnic thing.

I'd better be more sensitive from now on.

Smiley faces are good. It can be all too easy to misinterpret the tone of written words, especially in chat, forums, and so forth, so it helps set a pleasant tone.

It's also just a digital expression of how someone might interact with you in person. They'd smile in person, so they'll smile online.

All in all, it's a nothing really. If you don't use them, you don't use them! No need to feel bad about it.

I'm not from the Philippines, but my dad is so I'm pretty familiar with the culture. It's not really something to worry about, filipinos are just really friendly by nature in both casual and business interactions. There's no "hidden meaning" there to decipher, trust me.

And hasn't anyone other than a filipino ever smiled at you before? If not then the rest of the world must seem pretty unfriendly to you, sorry.

But it was really distracting when I would close the conversation window and it would light up again so I would have to stop what I was doing to open it up again, thinking she had a question only to see that it was just a smiley...Arrrg.

Just be yourself as has already been mentioned.

Sometimes I catch myself just writing those smilies like a reflex. It goes so fast, just some buttons to press.

I think your employee will adjust to your style. Some people create crazy smilies of their own and some don't use them at all.

Just stay polite on all your chats and everything should be fine.

Next time avoid eye contact with the smiley face and do not look at it for more than 3 seconds.

The longer you look at it the more awkward it becomes for both of you.

Just look away and continue your work as usual.

Filipinos will not be offended and will understand you have work to do.

Whenever I am having a conversion over an instant messenger, about every third line will contain some sort of smiley despite me being dead serious. Those of you who chat with me can attest to that I just got used to it having been online for over a decade and involved with a community where the average age is 17. It just sticks to you and very difficult to shake. Even when I fire people I send a smiley like or :'(

this makes things a bit awkward for me because I'm not sure what to do next; I usually just try and keep a professional conversation with employees. Am I being offensive by not smiling back?

    Dude

whats wrong with a smiley face?

    Does it make you uncomfortable?

    LOL

it just means he likes to smile... like i do... in real life! sometimes that comes out even in typing LOL!

dont worry about it, its not like you have to smile back

I've asked the question of my Filipino relatives before. The answer I'm given is that it's less expensive for them to text than to talk, that's what they do all the time.

Since that's such a crappy way to communicate in general, most develop shorthand that eventually invades communication regardless of the input device. As others have said, there's nothing wrong with your ignoring it. I'd bet the majority who do this hardly notice that they are (like girls who dot an 'I' with a heart and eventually that just becomes part of their signature instead of a conscious decision).

OMG - this is a funny thread.

I have been working with Filipinos for close to a year now and we only communicate via Skype. I have found them to be some of the most cheerful and funny people I have ever met and at times they have left me laughing to the point of tears.

In a job where I can spend days on end with no other human contact - a bunch of frickin' smiley faces are sometimes just what I need.

I don't understand why this is an issue! Or why this discussion has gone on for so long (although here I am posting on it.)

I can see no reason whatsoever to be put off by a friendly smile.

Being pleasant can go a long way.

I can imagine the face of the filipino guy looking at the monitor with the smile freezing in his face saying...

"what's going on? did I do something wrong? why he isn't smiling me back?? come on! look at me I'm smiling here!... hello?... still smiling... how can I start working if you don't smile back"

I think I am the last person left on the interwebs that doesn't use emoticons for any purpose, business or pleasure. I have been on the web since the mid 90's, and I thought they were childish back then, just like now.

Wow I sound like an old fart.

I would be more concerned about someone that wants to analyze an online chat smiley.

Do you analize people offline, that smile at you?
