Anyone Use "Second Life" For Business Reasons?

Hi Everybody,

I've been reading up on the digital world of "secondlifeDOTcom" recently.

And from what I can tell quite a few folks make decent money
from opening a virtual business on the website.

My Questions:
**Do any warriors here partake in the secondlife virtual world?
**And if so, are you there just to meet people, make virtual friends,
do some partying, shopping, etc?
**Does anyone have a working business operating there? Making money?

If you do business on the website, what kind of business do you operate?

Please post everything you know about secondlife if you have any experience with it.

Thanks so much. I'm looking forward to your answers.
I really like the idea of doing business this way.
I'd like some pros and cons if there are any.

Thanks again,
Sandy

    Sandy,

I've never used SecondLife to try to make money but I did have to use it for a college class and our final research paper was about how to make money with it.

Here are some ideas we generated:

    1.) Designer

If you're good at creating objects (any kind of object), then create them and sell them to other citizens who aren't as creative.

    2.) Advertiser

Get some land and create a "gathering spot". Make it a place people would want to hang out or at least visit each trip into the SL world to see what's new.

Then sell advertising to major corporations.

    3.) Teach

Set up a password protected area and charge admission. Teach a class, give a seminar, etc.

Sorry I don't have specifics but if you are trying to generate ideas I hope this helped.

I worked previously as an art gallery receptionist in SL for about a month and earned a few linden dollars from it. That was over a year ago.

I have an online friend there who now makes money from her malls and real estate business.

I have plans of re-entering the SL virtual world and try my luck in the real estate business too.

Meanwhile, Enthropia is an interesting option...

I've setup an autopilot income generator in SL that works
swimmingly, but unfortunately I don't divulge my business
models on public forums. If you do some research and give
it some thought, you will find that earning revenues in SL
is almost as easy as falling off a log.

    Thanks for these suggestions.

I'll keep this post updated when I figure out
what business I'm going to start.

I've read about different successful people doing real estate
    as Razorblade mentioned above.
Also selling clothes, jewelry, avatar design, and many others.

Maybe after I get established, I'll write a quick ebook
on the setting up a secondlife business and how it's
    going with me.

    Thanks,
    Sandy

    Sandy,

You have reminded me to take a second look at SL. There have been many 'real estate' land owners, shop owners that have made serious bucks (real money, not play game money) in the millions of dollars already in this virtual world.

If anyone hasnt' checked out SecondLife already, I would suggest you stop what you are doing right now and check it out to see what it's all about.

It's really a vision of the future. It reminds me of the web back in the 90's... primitive, but amazing.

Combine the gaming 3d world with the internet business world... pure genious.

If you are interested in palm reading, looking into the future, I would highly suggest looking into SecondLife if you want to see what's coming in the future, and the future capability of web 3.0 apps that are so very near.

My understanding was that Second Life was a bit overhyped. I heard that the numbers that they brag about are inflated and include lots of people that only log on once and quit, etc.

Don't get me wrong, I can understand the chance for opportunity, I just question how hard you'd have to work to make a decent profit.

I don't know much about it but I did watch a bbc 'click' (weekly web/gadget show) talk to some people that had make decent money from selling on their virtual real estate (one women claimed she'd made $100k in 2 months) and how big brands were now getting involved in it.

I downloaded this thing a while back ... Never used it much.. I was going through the tour and half way through the female character I set up to test it out .. Stripped down naked and then it froze up ..

When I restarted it, I was back at the very begining with all progress loss.. So I pretty much left it alone..lol

    Hi Everybody,

If you're at all still interested about pursuing this topic,

I've been looking around secondlife, and I came across some
YouTube tutorials (over 360 videos)about secondlife,
by a guy by the name of Torley Linden.

The founders of secondlife are by the Linden family. (I think)
You buy and sell everything on secondlife with Linden Dollars.
Then exchange them for real world dollars.

I think this is a real opportunity for Internet Marketers to
extend their internet business to a different virtual world
that can bring "Real World Money" into their bottom line.

So, my recommendation is to at least give it a look see.

Hope this helps, my fellow Warriors..

I looked into the possibility of buying advertising for my business on Second Life a while back and then totally forgot all about it. Thank you for bringing it back to my attention Sandy.

As I said above, I'd originally thought of using it to advertise my actual business, but judging by what you've said about it, I could make real money by selling things that will only be "useful" on Second Life. It sounds like a good business idea. Who knew an imaginery world filled with imaginery things could actually make real money (unless of course you are the creator)?!

If you can genuinely convert your fake money that you make in Second Life into real money then it's definately worth trying out!

I've never done anything like it before so I don't know how well I'd be able to make it work from a business stand-point but it's definately worth looking into it.

Can't wait for the upcoming WSO on how to become a Second Life millionaire from Sandy!

If I get a grip on it and actually start to understand how to use it to make some money then I'll probably dedicate at least an hour a day to Second Life from next year onwards just to see how it works out for me.

I know Marion, that's exactly what I'm saying. This seems like it's a very good opportunity.
Especially with a lot of some big name companies jumping on the bandwagon.

This reminds me of what happened on eBay a few years back.
In the beginning, it was just some homebodies trying to sell what was in their closets and garages. Now, almost every big company with a product to sell has a presence there.

Looks to me like SecondLife could be next.

When I was working as an art gallery receptionist in SL and as a model on the side, Sweden opened its embassy inworld. Sweden was the very first country to open an embassy in Second Life (that was in May of 2007) and I think a couple more has followed suit.

Real estate and product designing are what make big bucks in SL.

I have done few businesses in second life, virtual real estate, property rental and product development (inworld<->internet)...

You can make some money, no doubt about that, but I think that for the same amount of work, you can do much more in real life.

    Amounts are too small...

Maybe one day it'll get better, for now, make a living there is pretty difficult I think.

      It's a game, a virtual world - a second life.

In SL, you get to do what you can do in real life - and much more. You live, work, have fun in SL. You get married (they have priests, pastors, lawyers inworld), have children, have a home, work as an employee, or run a business. You can even have sex in SL.

Second Life has its own economy, and its currency is called the Linden Dollar. It is convertible to real money at L$250 to $1. You can buy lindens if you want to bring investment funds inworld, or you can start working to earn L$.

What's cool about being an SL resident is that you get to look what you want to look like. You can change your height, your hair color, your body built, the length of your nose, everything. And you get to choose your gender! :p

      Everything is possible in SL.

    Hey all,

I thought i'd offer an opinion here. Having been involved with SL for a bit over 2 years, let me just say the 'easy' money has been made. I know a few individuals who are pulling MASSIVE incomes selling sim's (parcels of digital) land and collecting obscene rent en masse. The rental business is saturated and most of the money made on SL is from property sales/rents and store fronts (need to be good at scripting or object creation - weapons, hair, etc. etc).

If you can figure out how to squeeze your way in, all the more power to you!

I've found Second Life frustratingly slow - you go to an area, then you wait for about 3 minutes while building are built in front of you, and some 1970's textures load. Then you add sound, and it drags it to a crawl.

I'm on a 1500kb connection, which is reasonably fast in Aussie land.

To me, it looks like Location Location Location, as they say, is the most important - there seems to be a lot of uninhabited land around...

I get the same feeling that newyorktrader said - the easy money has been made. Squeezing yourself in these days will be harder.

    cheers

If I could describe the meaning of Web 3.0, I would suggest that you check out SecondLife.

This is the melding of gaming type virtal worlds with the online internet world.

I bet in 10 years from now, this is how we will all surf the web... and look back at the ancient 'browsers'/'IM apps' we use now and laugh... similar to the revolution of the graphical user interface.

Imagine a forum system where your avitar is a 3d character in a virtual game environment you can walk around to different sections of the forum, and interact with others, almost like if it were the real world...

That's whats in store for the future... and SecondLife is a glimpse into that future.

SecondLife reminds me of how I felt when I first discovered the WorldWideWeb in the mid-90's...
