Is there much money to be made in marketing music?

As people always say you should market things you are actually interested in music would be an easy one for me.

Thing is I am not sure how you would promote your favorite genre? What outlets would do affiliate schemes? amazon?

Who else?

Any other considerations to take into account which would make it different than promoting clickbank products?

It's a bit hard to promote music unless you're an outstanding musician, it would be so easy for you to pop it on youtube, and get traffic just because you're awesome and then sell your own albums through it.

Other than that I don't see alot of affiliate or publisher programs relating to music.

    Sucks.

That is the only thing I can think of other than the niche I'm promoting that I'm into...

I don't have a wide range of interests really so I guess I'm gonna have to sell something I have no interest in like penis pills (well I do have an interest in those but that's another story).

How about creating an indie radio website for bands to release songs on? A music fan website with social networking, a good sized audience for bands to advertise to, etc, could be monetized...

Music artists were screwed by the record companies during the golden period of the nineties.

Most successful artists never saw any royalties, even those who sold millions of albums.

Only songwriters saw any real money from the publishing side, but the record companies basically took most of the billions of dollars made from record sales during the golden years - and paid artists nothing whenever possible.

In fact it was worse than that, artists would actually OWE the record companies money after making them hundreds of millions of dollars in profit from single and album sales.

The money back then was in the live concerts for artists, now it's still the case but endorsement deals are also a huge money-spinner for the top music artists.

        Exactly OnePlusOne...

The only money to be made in the music industry is live gigs....we actually have a service we call "Follow you around town" where we do blasts for the artists in that targeted area they are going to get more fans to show up to the gigs.

Most artists are under the impression that you just crank a song out, upload it to Itunes and then Apple sends you $1M the week after that....

And once you have worn yourself out to the bone and have traveled to every joint and bar within 500 miles and played it 68 times, you then are at the plateau of "making a living"

This leaves not much for the SEO expert that is promoting you, that is why I recommend staying away

I agree, especially the youngsters who don't understand the business side of things...

There is a very important "market" in music that most of you are failing to see. This is specifically for marketers that know how to get traffic to sites and fan pages of course, so SEO skill is required.

For example, if you are a skilled marketer, approach indie bands out there who are looking to market their material, how to upload their stuff to Itunes, Amazon, e.t.c..., how to make viral videos, how to maintain a fan page in facebook, how to create and market their fan page, how to blog progress of their travels... I mean the world is your oyster if you look at that market from the needs of indie musicians.

I've been a musician my entire life and done extremely well. I can tell you this much for sure. There's kazillions of hotel bands, indie artists, and even some producers and indie record companies who are desperate for some marketer to swoop in and take the job of online promotion off their hands, so they can get down to the business of creating music and playing gigs.

Some of those folks do 6 nights a week, practicing 4 hours every day. Believe me, been there, done that. They don't have time to be all IM savvy.

I think that music is so cheap these days and free. I mean I never buy an album. Look at HotNewHipHop.com or ThisSongisSick.com . You could follow there models. Mainly banner ads...
