AVI is the best quality - the other 3 are all compressed versions to make the files smaller so depending on how much compression is done they could all be good or bad.

Apple computers can play the same video as any computers - the player is usually just a piece of software so the platform is not really a factor.

yes avi does play higher quality. Just one thing though, if you're uploading files onto amazon and playing back on your website, you might want to convert it to either flv or mp4 for faster loading. People are terrible on waiting.

I use .MP4 files because they provide the best quality at a low bit rate, so you can have very small files.

I suggest you use them, but make sure to compress it the right way.

I actually did a video on this, I hope it helps -

Guys, please be careful not to confuse containers and codecs.

.avi is just a container. I could put inside an uncompressed video that has several gigabytes a minute or a video using the very advanced DivX codec.

So we should rather be speaking about the codecs and there .H264 is one of the most advanced ones. It is used on youtube and other sites. Usually they store their videos in .mp4 containers, but you could also find .H264 in .avi files. You can not simply rename those, though! They have a different way of telling the application how their streams are interleaved. .avi can also for example not be bigger than 4 gb which can make it useless for HD movies because they can easily become larger than this. (I will save you from more tech speak now)

Just for clarification. A container is a file that contains video- and audiostreams. But it says nothing about their codec. Think about it like a book. It can be big or small but it doesn't say anything about the language or the quality of the writing inside.

You can download a tool like S.U.P.E.R to play around with video formats and codecs. But as I said, .H264 currently offers the best quality/filesize ratio. If you want a free alternative you can go with Xvid.

For the audio codec I'd recommend mp3 since it has a decent quality and widespread support.
