    Partner Guy,

Sony Vegas has the largest range of video codecs in its editing package, and you can select either the full version of Sony Vegas or movie studio, all reasonably priced.

I'm a Final Cut Pro guy, but I dabble in Premiere. I'll use imovie in the clutch if I have to.

It really depends on what your end product is intended for. If you are using it for broadcast purposes, then you need to be looking for a high end solution. If you are making home videos, then look into Premiere or Sony Vegas. Both are inexpensive solutions, Sony being the cheaper of the two.

What are you making videos for?

Primarily video tutorials for my websites and videos for YouTube. I will check these options out.

Someone else told me that Pinnacle was a good editing software as well.

Just a bit of disagreement. Sony Vegas is more than capable of producing broadcast quality work.

[and what is meant by broadcast quality??--some mean the way a video looks but to broadcast engineers it's the luminance and chrominance values as well as the acquisition format used)

In fact for a while VegaS was one of a few editors able to natively edit footage from Sony's XD-Cam line of cameras, which are becoming industry favorites (though not as entrenched as the Betamax line).

I'd recommend you download the editors you're interested in. Get your hands dirty and pick the one which which allows you to work in the most efficient manner.

I like Magix Video Software. The new version has more features but is more complex, I liked the old one better, nevertheless it's a great piece of software. They also have a Easy Video version, great for creating videos fast. However, if you have Windows Movie Maker, I don't really know if the easy version is worth it

I've been a fan of Serif MoviePlus for many years New features in MoviePlus X5 from Serif (not an affiliate link).

The thing to bear in mind, though, is whether your computer can handle editing HD video files. You'll need a lot of memory, disk space, and processing capacity.
