A Note About Those Emails You Sent Me ...

You sent me three emails this morning, about some webinar you were putting on. Then immediately sent me two more about the replay you were putting up. I had no idea who you were, or why you thought I would be interested. So, I went to my spam filter and saw you had gotten the notices asking that you prove you were human, and had whitelisted yourself. That's fine. Since I want to get information when someone has something interesting to say, or I have requested the information, I merely removed you from the list, hoping you would recognize that as a signal to only send stuff I ask for, or that would interest me.

Removing is not the same as blocking. It let's you send me an email the next time you want to send me something. But, it also tells you politely, that I don't want spam. Email me again when you have some information to share.

Apparently you didn't understand. You sent some more messages, and whitelisted yourself once more. And again, I had no idea who you were, or why you thought I would be interested in this opportunity, so early on a Sunday morning. No personal message, nothing of use to me. Just another in a series of rapid fire poorly written sales type emails. Spam.

I blocked you.

I'll never see another message from you. If you ever have anything worthwhile to tell me, I'll never hear it. If you ever want to build a relationship with me, I'll never know it.

It's early on a Sunday morning, and I am in a foul mood because Daylight Savings Time just kicked in. And you just blew it.

Have a nice day.

PS - Learn to spell. And, how to use punctuation.

Looks like you didn't understand the post.

Kirk - why not just unsubscribe? Though I admit there are some emails I've routed to a "dead" folder because the lists were difficult to get removed from.
They can keep hounding me till the cows come home - and I'll never see it.

        Kay,

I've found that unsubscribing to folks who send that type of series out usually results in raising eight more heads on a hydra.

He COULD unsubscribe and not share this information with the forum but then it wouldn't be a learning experience.

There will always be people who miss the point (or don't care) but there are others who just need things pointed out to them using a real world example.

        Kirk,

If you're talking about a challenge/response system like SpamArrest, removing the sender from the whitelist isn't likely to be noticed as a statement. They probably just thought you were a new subscriber and did what they always do with those.

          You're right Paul.

That was the system, but the point seems to be missed by readers is that I was trying to talk about how skipping the building a relationship part of the job and merely sending useless crap can irritate a prospect so that they never get to know what you might have in the way of value.

I've used the system to block pure spammers before, and it wasn't worth posting here. But I do believe I got on these guys list through a WSO. Their only problem was that this is the first time I've heard from them since I purchased their WSO, and by slamming me with a bunch of crapp on the morning of a DST clock re-set, they blew their chance to build a relationship and move me along to the next step in their funnel.

The moral of the story should probably be that if you want to keep folks on your mailing list, you should try to build a relationship rather than pop up every now and then slamming them with some opportunity unrelated to their knowledge of you.

As long as we have marketers posting about "mailing multiple times a day" we'll have other marketers complaining about getting mail multiple times a day.

A woman I know sends out those stupid jokes/comments/political crap/etc
emails. She got my email address from a message sent to several people that included myself.

I have asked her every way possible to take me off her list. (so far, I've resisted the "look bi***h approach) What she did was change her message to "I know you said you don't want to get emails, but you have to see this". LIke some marketers - she doesn't get it.

I created a folder just for her in gmail and all her messages are routed there unopened. Within a couple months, there were over 400 messages in the folder (which I deleted unopened).

Sometimes you just gotta protect yourself and your email box.

I received about 8 emails like this recently.. They went right to my spam folder, so it was less annoying, but it still just seems like ineffective marketing to me. A waste of time in my opinion, since I don't even know who the sender is.

      Kirk,

If it was the result of a WSO purchase, they may be assuming the product demonstrated the value they offer.

You make a good point about how one goes about building relationships. I'm not sure most people even think about that. Especially a lot of the WSO sellers, who use account names like ChampionThunder or ferdinand12345, and don't even use their real (or company) names in their postings. Then they act surprised when their mail isn't opened, or they get spam complaints.

The fact that you seem even a little unsure of how you got on their list says something about the way they "introduced" themselves.

It's a sad thing, too. It doesn't take that much effort to do it right.

I find myself on lists that I never subscribed to in the first place and lists that do not have an unsubscribe link at all. They do however seem to know my first name. I just report them as spam and never have to be bothered with them again.
