A barrage of questions from a newbie.

Okay so, this may turn out to be a ton of questions, but I'd really enjoy some professional advice. First off I'd like to say that I have been reading about IM for a number of months now, but have never put anything into actions so I do not have first hand or technical knowledge. So I apologize if these questions are really nooby lol.

Alright so, one of my biggest passions in life includes nature and animals. I am very passionate specificly about endangered species, and inhumane activities. I thought about making a website that includes a blog on these subjects. The main website would be general information, the blog which would be attatched and easily viewable as a 'tab' on the website, would have detailed information about different species, animal stories in the news, up to date info, etc. Which I would focus on on a daily or weekly basis depending on how much I can work with at the time. I never thought to make profit of this but here are some questions I have.

1) Is this a "sleezy" market? By that I mean, most animal and wildlife websites are not for profit, so is it a bad idea to even think about any profit from this?
2) I would not be making direct sales from affiliate programs or anything, if anything I would sell tshirts with my designs to help promote my website and the cause. BUT are there other ways to make money, and NOT from pushing some outside product? Like putting ads on my site maybe? Or how? Please explain this as detailed as possible.

Also, as far as web hosting goes.. I was looking at webs dot com, and from what I can see it gives you a website builder and has blog support and a domain for $5-$7 a month.. But isn't unlimited space.

1) Is using webs dot com a good place to start?

2) Will a blog take up a ton of space, therefor need unlimited space?

3) Because I know little about coding, are there any other good sites out there that have customizable templates that I will have better success with? Who and why?

4) What about sites like Bluehost? If I find a cheap hosting service, can I expect a website builder too?

5) If I make a webs dot com site, can I connect it to a host site like Bluehost, and get the host sites benefits and unlimited space and still have a fully customizable site? I'm not sure how this works.

The reason I am not interested in something like Wordpress is because I do not want my site to be entirely a blog, but also have other website elements.. Your thoughts? I'd appreciate any advice or even criticism. Thank you.

    1) No it is not a bad idea. You are providing quality information to the world. Earning money is your right.

    2) No, it will not take a ton of space. Images and text never take too much space. You will be perfectly fine.

    3) If you know how to use joomla then go for it. Otherwise go for wordpress on your main site too. Wordpress can do anything. You can make it look like a normal website. It is highly customizable just like joomla.

4)Yes, you can expect a website builder. You can see the things each hosting will be providing you by visiting its site. Make sure it has site builder before signing up.

    5) I am not sure if I got your question. Are you talking about having a mysql database? Most of the hosts allow remote database connections but you have to confirm with them before doing something like that.

I have never even heard of Joombla to be honest, but I'm looking at the site now and a little confused. It is free yes? And how much coding knowledge will I need to know, or does it have a site builder?

        Hi.
About site builder, I am not sure what other elements of site do you need, but as I am using Wordpress or Joomla it have a lot of extensions and it is very simple to expand your site for your needs. I think I will not make mistake when I say that you will build your site simple and faster using Wordpress than using site builder.

Wordpress is a blog system, but also support a static pages, that simple you can convert your wordpress site into a website with 5 static pages plus on one page you can have a blog, where you post your news and people comment it. This is great for content change on your site. Your site will be dynamic not static.

If you need some help with wordpress I can give you some introduction.

        Have a good day.

        Yes it is free!

No coding knowledge needed. Just few days to understand every option . If you have cpanel hosting then you can install it with just one click using "fantastico" option available in cpanel.

      1) Not sleazy. There's a ton of animal websites that make money either through ads, donations, or memberships. Not all of that goes toward the cause in every case.

      2) Probably the easiest way to get started is to run Google Adsense ads. Many see this as an inferior way of making money but it's a great start. Simply sign up for a Google AdSense account, design your ad, get the code and Google automatically displays ads on your site. They split the revenue with you.

I still have Adsense on a lot of my sites. A friend of mine does IM part time and makes 10K a year all with Adsense.

      3) Have to tell you, Wordpress can probably do what you want. I'm just finishing up a site where 100% of the profits go to charity and I have custom search features (all done with Wordpress categories). If you want a really sharp looking site check out the Thesis theme wich is about $67, but worth it. It also helps in search engine rankings.

      4) Might also want to check out Hostgator .com. They have about 50% of my sites.

      5) Not sure what you mean.

Now for the stuff you didn't ask...

How are you planning on getting traffic to this site? Usually it's not a "build it and they will come"

Most successful sites start out with keyword research. Find keyword phrases that have enough people searching for them, but the competition is low. Do you know what keywords your visitors search for?

You also might want to get some help building your site. I use a guy from Pakistan that I hired on odesk. We communicate through skype and his English is very good. $8/hr.

I get that you are trying to do this on the cheap. Learning this stuff takes time and you usually do it badly the first time out. But good on you for getting off the sidelines and doing something. At the very worst, you'll learn something.

Thank you to everyone for the info, I have found it very useful. I will probably go with Wordpress, as it sounds like a good option so far.

@fscobie: Well, like I said before I am still fairly new to this but I had planned on using things like social marketing (facebook, twitter, etc), and forum and blog posting to advertise. What else might you suggest?

This brought me to another question.. I just remembered I had seen some sites that create backlinks for free for you at a service.. is this a good or bad idea? I'm not sure if those kinds of services are considered blackhat or not?

I don't think you can connect webs.com site to another host but I might be wrong. I would advise you to invest in a domain and hosting plan if you are planning to be in this field for long term. Not only having your domain will help you to brand your business and become an authority in the subject, it will also help you to rank higher when compared to free hosting sites.

And you don't need to having coding knowledge to manage your site. If you plan to use wordpress, you can have tons of plugins and themes that can be downloaded and installed without touching any code.

Regarding your hosting questions, you can check out hostgator. They have some very good plans. You can start with shard hosting and if your site grows to be huge, move to dedicated hosting solutions..

    Hope that helps,

Could I connect my own domain to Wordpress? Without buying it from them? I noticed upon signup they offered a .com for $17, but I think I've seen them cheaper elsewhere.

Here is what is use and also recommend

Namecheap - $9.95 domain names with free whois guard (plus search for coupons for additional discount)
Hostgator - $9.95 hosting plan that allows you to host unlimited sites on a single hosting plan

Wordpress is a free blog platform. Once you have your hosting, you can deploy it for your domain...

    Hope that was clear
