Hi,

I am new to website hosting and everything, and I am a little lost.

I bought a domain for a year from Go Daddy. I then found a good hosting deal on Nexx.com. I have all the files and what not for the site, which limits me to 3 pages, but I have no idea how to get them online. I went to the file manager option and was able to upload a bunch of files. But when I clicked on the files it brought up the webpage with a long sub-domain name with it. When I tried going to my site, the InstaPage that Go Daddy just created when I bought it, came up.

Can anyone help me out with what the hell I have to do to get my site going?

Thank you in advance!

I am confused, lol but lets see if we can sort out where you are.

When you buy a domain, you need to change the name servers to that of the host.

Then on the host, you need to add the domain as an add on domain.

Did you get those things done?

Sorry, I am very new to this. I am not entirely sure what you mean by name server and host.

I bought the domain "jeffbassettmedia.com" from Go Daddy for like 17 bucks for the year.

I then went out searching for free hosting, but eventually settled for paying Nexx.com 10 bucks to have some unlimited plan for a year.

Both Godaddy and Nexx list the domain "jeffbassettmedia.com" when I log in.

I have all my HTML files with all the image files used on it ready to upload, but I have no idea how I am supposed to do this.

I was living on Nantucket for a bit.

        This is relevant, lol -

So, on Nantucket they do this crazy thing where the houses get names.

They put these placks on the house that will say the name on the house.

So, the house I lived in was called "bedazzled"

Now, I could take this plaque or plack how ever you want to spell it and it could be removed from the house and moved all over. Consider this name a domain name.

The actual house itself would be the host. Where the files all go, and where you put your stuff like the couch and chairs and etc.

There has to be some nails to put the plaque on the house. A connection.

You want to nail your name to the host.

This is done by changing the name servers - and this is done from the back end of your godaddy account.

But to do this, you have to know what the name servers are from the host. So, yes - they will give you an address something like ns1.hostingaccountof.co m and ns2.hosting account. com and you have to enter this information to godaddy so they know where your plaque has to be nailed - where is your house.

Once they nail it in that direction (which can take some time depending on different factors) your host needs to know the domain is coming in too. It sounds like they might know that? Did you talk on the phone when setting up the account?

          Jill,

I love your story, it has actually made me understand this all a lot better.

As I said I did find my nails and am waiting for it to take effect at its new home. I did not talk to anyone while setting it up.

It is definitely starting to work. I went to my domain, and instead of getting the Instapage from Godaddy, I got a 'WElcome to my future site via Nexx' thing.

You might need to add on the domain into Nexx too (not sure how you set up the account and what their thing is)

Does Nexx know that you own that domain? Did you put it in when signing up for the account?

once your domain does migrate over and the connection is solid between the house and the sign you put on your house you can move your stuff in. It will go to the host.

So, you need all your files for the site to go into the main folder on the host.

You can upload these files via the file manager or via FTP.

Hi, I think and I understand what you are saying, and it sounds like you are experiencing trouble with your domain name servers. Your webhost (Nexx.com) should have sent you an email with 2 name servers. If not, you can contact them and they can give them to you.

Once you have these name servers, you go to GoDaddy, login , and go to Domain Manager. Once you are in there click on your domain name and change the name servers to match the ones that your webhost gave you. It could 24-48 hours for the changes to take effect, but usually it doesn't.

Great thanks! I found the email Nexx sent me with two DNS (which im pretty sure are Name Servers at this point) and entered them over at Godaddy.

So assuming this works, what is the next step?

Type your domain name into an address bar in your favorite browser and keep hitting refresh until you see your website :p

Kidding..... Well, kind of. Assuming you uploaded your files to your webhost properly, you should be able to see your website soon. It could take 5 mins, it could take 2 days. It's up to the DNS servers. It's usually 5-10 mins for me

So when I go into the file manager with Nexx, i get

    A folder called 'jeffbassettmedia.com'
    A html file titled 'index'
    And a trash can

I went into the folder and uploaded all my stuff. Nothing shows though

When I go to the OLD file manager (they have a new one I guess), it is all still there, just in a more basic layout. Except, it starts with just a folder titles 'www' and when thats opened, the same three things are there. When I view my files on here, and click on one of the html files, it takes me to my page at the URL: "https://jeffbassettmedia.dc1.netfirms.com/jeffbassettmedia.com/Home.html"

how many total pages is your site?

The "index" page is the home page to your site - when doing html, when a page says index, the search engines know this it the first page that should display.

How many other pages do you have other than index?

I have another story about Nantucket.

So, I was walking one day, and it was a long walk down to where the boats come in.

One of the streets I hit was called "Fair Street"

So this was kinda neat an funny.

All the houses on Fair Street have the name in their domains names.

There was a house called "My Fair Lady" and another one called "Fairytale" and "Fair way" - you get the picture.

Think of it this way - it was a bunch of houses (private accounts) all on the same block (shared hosting).

They all had something in common that they were all on the same block - yet each had a different name.

Now think of it this way - the block needs to know what name goes on each house. And your host needs to know which name goes with each account.

I can see the domain is pointing over to your Nexx account - but not sure Nexx knows which house exactly on the block that the name needs to go to exactly.

Does this make sense? (if it does not, don't feel bad, lol)

I have three pages. This is because I remember it saying I signed up for 3 pages or something. But none of them are labeled index. The index.html file was already there, and when I click it on it, it takes me to the same page that I get when I go to jeffbassettmedia.com except its

In the site you load up to that folder, you need an index page to replace the one they might have on there as the current index page.

They may have a default index in place - so if none of your pages are labeled index then their index page will take over.

I get a blank kinda page when going to your address (wwwjeffbassettmedia.dc1.netfirms.com/index.htm).

For immediate assistance by Nexx technical support team, contact 24/7 Customer Care.
So, you could try this. Looks like email support - or tutorials - you may need to go digging a bit and watch some videos.

I have a feeling the domain is pointed right, but Nexx has no idea where the domain goes.

It might be something in your cpanel to set it in - but no clue what your specific cpanel looks like.
