Google updates Blogger - Would you still prefer Wordpress?

Blogger users published more than half a billion blog posts in 2010, which were read by more than 400 million active readers across the globe.

Next-Generation User Interface and many other features including Google Web Toolkit are planned in 2011.

Watch the video from Google (not any affiliate link) at Youtube:

YouTube - Have you looked at Blogger lately?

Do you think Blogger will be more popular than Wordpress in 2011?

I've never used Blogger. Do they have two different versions ie a self-hosted like wordpress .org? Might be an interesting project to learn something new. Do you think they are preferentially treated in Google?

I will never use Blogger again, ever.

If I put a domain up with WordPress, I can protect my investment for as long as I choose to do so.

When Blogger decided that my 20 blogs over there needed to be taken down, they suspended them and told me that I must prove I am a human to get them turned back on.

I did, and two weeks later, they suspended me again for the same stated reason.

I reverified, and two weeks later, I was suspended again.

After 6 separate incidents, I through my hands up and let them suspend all of my blogs... Screw Blogger for evermore....

I've used both of them far back then, even before I entered the realm of marketing and was more of a webmaster.

Blogger is awesome, it's pre-defined, has tons of amazing features and is free. Except for the domain name of course. But personally, in my searches on google, I've never really seen many blogger blogs up there in the pageranks... more of either personal wordpress blogs or non-software sites.

Wordpress is much more versatile due to all the plugins they have as well. The trouble is the setting up and maintenance though. I do like the multi-user interfaces/themes as well.

Yeah! Blogger is soon introducing many new interfaces which will be awesome! There will be no difference between WP and Blogger. See more details here: http://www.hacktutors.info/2011/03/b...e-awesome.html

    Thanks!

Guys, you seem to miss the MOST important difference:

With a self-hosted WP site you are in control = you own it.
With Blogger (or any "free" solution) you are NOT in control = Google owns it.

(Somebody with "WordPress" in his avatar shouldn't post such an ignorant reply...)

Blogger also can be used as bloging CMS sepratly on any domain and wordpress also offer's free sub domain hosting.

Big differance as per my opinion is the huge plugin support available for wordpress makes it much better then blogger.

It's also worth noting with the free WP platform, they delete your account if you monetize it, which kind of defeats the object of internet marketing.

I am interested though, how do I get a blogger blog onto my own domain, so it's mine, I own it and no one can remove it?

I've not heard of this before.

Anyone that goes that route should routinely backup their blogger content. Although Blogger cannot delete your domain, they *can* delete your content hosted on blogger. The webmaster who has a backup of their blogger blog can simply import it to a Wordpress blog, or host it as static content.

WordPress is what you need if you want stability and you want to be in control of your own fate.

Blogger is great for getting started fast but I don't see it as a long-term solution to blogging because of all the problems people have had in the past with them closing down your site.

That being said you could set up a WordPress blog on your own hosting account with your own domain name for less than $6 a month.

              Why even bother with Blogger?

              Thanks Mojojuju,

I get it now. You can have your own domain but Blogger still host it. I thought from one of the other posts you could create the blogger blog and move it nice and easily to your own domain and hosting.

Thanks for taking the time to clear that up for me.

This conclusion is only valid if you compare the free versions with each other and even then that is, with respect, your opinion and that might not be shared by others.

There is a major problem with using the free version of Blogger and that was admirably pointed out by tpw in his post above.

At this point, WP is the CLEAR leader and they'd need to do something stupid in order for that to change.

But I would never consider blogger because I don't make significant investments in hosted blogs.

That's twice in 2 days we've agreed with each other, if this carries on people will start to talk.

I wouldn't touch blogger if they stuck fairy lights all over it. They still own it, control it and can do whatever they like with it.

I'm not saying Blogger is awful and I saw a great couple of video's by Zeus (John Schwartz) about using them with some Amazon plugin, it looked a very good plan for a newbie especially.

For me however I can't put time and effort into something that is owned by someone, that has and always will, move the goal posts at random intervals, as and when it feels like it.

If the fact that people have quite literally lost huge amounts of these blogs "overnight" doesn't put people off, I'll never know what does.

I saw in a thread recently Myob saying, and I'll probably butcher this slightly, that they had something like 500 blogger blogs several years ago, they now have around 20. So that's 480 sites that were removed without notice.

I'd go mental if one of my sites was removed.

I dont like hosted blogs, and everytime i make a blogger they just look CHEAP and spammy.

Although i think Wordpress.com has some uses. While i usually use self-hosted wordpress on almost all my sites, sometimes it amazes me how FAST you can make a nice little site on wordpress.com. And they look 100x better compared to blogger.

There is another, big advantage: It has NOTHING to do with Google, for a change

In Turkey we don't have the choice as Blogger.com has been banned.

There are quite a few countries where a big website can get banned for the actions of a few people. So if Blogger, Hubpages and Facebook got banned, wouldn't it be a good idea to have your own WP blog?

If the ban gets lifted I will use Blogger for a couple of disposable blogs designed to help promote something, but not for anything major.

The problem with blogger is once you put the content up on their site they own the content. They can turn your blog off in a second. So, all of your hard work goes down the drain if they feel like what you were putting on the blog is not good enough content.

So, in my opinion I think you should always go with your own domain name and WordPress.

I have started my internet business with blogger blog and I have lot of huge content into it and don't know that can we migrate this content to wordpress.

But blogger is under control of Google and you know Google changes their might every single year and they play the control of traffic..

Blogger blog is good for only using backlinks and nothing else unless you don't have money to invest in hosting to open up your own blog.

I will soon migrate my blogger content to wordpress and it will take a huge lot of time for me and don't know how to start it.

    Thanks

I have used both blogger and wordpress. I much prefer WP. I like the way my sites look. I don't ned roboform to remember what my passwords and user names are. I don't have to try and figure out what I am logging into. My analytics, adsense, webmaster, gmail or blogger or whatever. I just go to the wp login screen and there it is.

WP has a ton of users (I am talking about self-hosted here) and I have learned a lot about how the internet works just by using wp more and more. And I don't have to worry about my blogs getting suspended because somebody decided to report them.

Could I take off the blogger bar, sure, but interestingly enough, those blogs with no blogger bar, never seem to rank for anything.

If you are just starting out online, Blogger is a great way to go. It has a bunch of decent features and the sites can look OK and you can get a website up and running in a very short amount of time.

When I teach classes in how to get started, I use blogger to get everybody up and going. They like it, it works for them and they get a big boost right away. But I always advise people that this is just a way to start, if they want to make their internet business bigger and better then eventuallly they will need to move up to their own website.

But for instant payoff, Blogger is great. For long term sustainability (IMO) wordpress self hosted is much better.

I have successfully used Blogger for some websites and I find it a good alternative when you are working on a shoe-string budget. With just a domain name, you get a full-fledged website. Even though there is lack of full control, it's a lot better than free version of WordPress. That said, nothing beats a self-hosted blog/site.

Yes, I'll still prefer Wordpress - the self-hosted version only, though.

Why the f would I spend all my time building up a business that could be taken away from me without notice? Almost all free blog providers prohibit commercial blogs, which makes Blogger and Wordpress.com pretty shaky foundations to be building a business on.
