Am I missing anything?

Hi all,

Heres the situation: I've found a couple keywords that are relevant to my interests/passions that have 3K+ global searches per month. I realise this is lower than many would bother with but I figured I'd start small. Plus I figured even if I got only 25% of the traffic and only converted 10% of that into a sale then it'd still be worth it - in both money and mostly experience.

For one of these keywords the most backlinks to any one site is just under 200 - from what I've read over at viperchill.com this shouldnt be that difficult.

Anyway, so keywords check, backlinks check. I can get a domain, not exact but fairly close. I've had a look and there is a relevent and (seemingly) quality affiliate product on CB - I could also create my own easily if this all went well.

Google trends seems to think the searches on these keywords have been steady (not declining) for a couple years.

Just wondering if I've missed anything that could change my mind about pursueing these keywords? What do the more experienced think?

Thanks so much in advance!

I'd say go for it. You don't have to get the first result right away to be successful. As long as you can make enough to pay for your hosting the first month you should be off to a good start.

... it will all begin by asking yourself this question...

How much do I intend to make, $5,000, $15,000,?

From there, you'll define which market to take...

...and not what you're passionate about.

Lastly, you're creating a false assumptions by saying 10% of people searching will buy from you.

It's a BIG mistake to assume that.

What is the PR and domain age of the sites in the top 10 results. Is the keyword in the Title Tags and URL's for a majority of the sites?

I would look at those four bonus points of interest and then honestly I'd just jump and go for it.

My first site I built I did the keyword research incorrectly and thought I was getting an "easy" keyword. What I ended up with was a moderately competitive keyword and I still ranked my site.

It was a great learning process and gave me a great understanding on SEO. If you are interested in the niche, even better to learn with because you are more apt to stick with it instead of giving up out of frustration.

You're going to fail. If you're afraid of failure then you do not belong in the Internet Marketing Business. Period.

Take the dive. Sounds like you've got a good plan.

Also, I feel you are probably setting yourself up for disappointment if you expect a 10% sales conversion. That is extremely high. You should probably set your sites more on a 3% mark and feel lucky to get 2%.

I have been quietly working in the Internet Marketing industry for over 10 years and have become an expert in driving traffic and SEO tactics. I have a new site all about niche marketers and I would love for you to check it out. Don't worry, this site is all about free content, not a sales page.

      Competition analysis.

As well as the SEO stuff BloggingPro mentioned above, also look at how they are monetising, if they appear to be making it work, their customer/reader comments etc. Looking at the big picture regarding those who are already there can help to answer your question about whether to pursue, as well as providing info that's useful for when you proceed.

You should do it if you really believe that you can get it ranked and make money with it. Have a plan of how to monetize whether it be Adsense, CPA, products, etc.

It sounds like you're on the right track. Just don't get caught up into the numbers too much. Sometimes even if everything adds up, there's always the intangibles. You will never know just what your results will be until you try. I.M. is really just one big experiment. Once you find the formula that works, you keep on reproducing it.

      Hi BloggingPro,
The domain ages arent available for most of them (no idea why) but one is 8years old and one is 6months old. The highest PR is 4 for the top result but the rest have '?' where PR usually is - I'm using seoquake and seo for firefox. Only one site actually has the keywords in the URL and title, but it is a shocker, the owner just filled the homepage with ads and clearly hasnt bothered with a backlinking strategy (as they only have 34backlinks).

Thanks so much for the extra pointers!

It's looking like I will. This is as much an experiment as it is anything else so...fingers crossed!

      Hi,
If I'm honest if I made $100 I'd be stoked! lol I figured to stick with areas I'm familiar with as this would allow me to create good content and prevent me from getting bored. The 10% thing was just me trying to objectify my thought of 'if only a small number of people bought something I'd be happy and consider it a successful test' but your totally right. Thank you

      Hi,
Thanks for the reminder! Definately going to avoid ads on the site if possible! Hopefully just affiliate marketing will be all that is needed.

Main aim is to create quality content, something that is actually useful, then to monetize that.

Thanks so much for this - will bare this in mind! Just half-way through reading the '80/20 principle' by Koch and he says something very similar!
