Selling Ad Space on Affiliate Review Site - Good/Bad?

I've struggled with this question for awhile now so have never done anything about it. I have a lot of websites and about 10+ review sites like the one in my sig.

I get multiple emails daily from people that want to buy ad space on my review sites for banner ads. How much, if at all, will this dilute the affiliate earnings on a site? Or is that a question that can even be answered?

For the most part, the folks that want to buy ad space don't have affiliate programs - I click over and check out their sites. So, if I sell them banner space, that's the only income I would derive from them and then what are they taking away from me w/ regards to aff sales?

On another, the guy does have an affiliate program and we just go back and forth about him approving my affiliate account. I'm not sure why I would sell him banner space when I've given him a good review anyway and would put an affiliate banner up for free.

Anyone have experience with this stuff? I'm kind of stumped.

Honestly, you won't know if it'll be worth your time until you try. Pat Flynn had a few interesting posts recently on how he priced advertising space based on the estimated number of Adwords click each advertiser would receive, showing that buying banner space would be a cost-effective alternative.

Maybe you could set some sort of formula that says, assuming adding banners draws away 50% of my affiliate traffic (or 30% or 70% depending on where you put them on your site and how prominent you plan to make them), you need banner revenue to replace XX dollars of affiliate income and price them that way?

But definitely test it out if you have people interested!

I would stick to whats already working making money.

If you want to test its probably better to test with one site see if it make any positive changes.

Yes, that's sort of along the lines of what I was thinking. Would have to test it - and, frankly, I haven't jumped into selling ad space because that's another thing that I'll have to manage (1 more Excel Spreadsheet).

Although w/ the # of sites that I have, it could be a lot of $$ if I just shoved it off to someone else even. Am still wrestling with this one.
