Do You Use/Like Homepage Opt In Pop Ups?

I've been doing a lot of searches for guest posts and joint ventures lately. This has caused me to end up at lots and lots of blogs. A huge batch of these blogs are using a homepage opt in pop up. Some of them wait a few seconds to pop up...but most just show up right away.

I have never been very interested in using the pop ups because I personally hate seeing them myself. They annoy the hell out of me. I don't like to show viewers anything that I don't want to see myself.

I don't discourage others from using them though because I've heard they can work. What has your experience been using these pop up opt ins?

I see a 10% conversion for my homepage opt in (usually in the sidebar). How much higher conversions are you seeing using these pop ups?

If they want to opt-in, I'm all for it.

Forcing them to opt-in wouldn't get me quality subscribers. No point in my opinion.

Well a pop up isn't forcing anybody to opt in...it's just showing them the offer if they want to see it or not.

I'd be really interested to know the different conversion rates as well. I just have a sidebar opt-in right now, but still haven't had any opt ins. It is still the site's first week, but it makes me wonder if a person is more likely to fill out a pop up than find a sidebar.

A pop-up to opt-in is anoying for someone that surf the Internet everyday. If your target audience is a casual user of the computer, don't be shy to use it ONE TIME. It is so anoying to close it 10 times a day.

I am thinking of using a pop-up at the exit. A question for not annoying the users while they are reading the content.

Many users will forget to opt-in/not even think about it during their visit to a site but when they are leaving the site, I think it's a good idea to remind them that they could opt-in and get your super awesome gift for free

Also ONE pop-up should be more than enough. Some blogs/sites force you to see 1,445,676,789 pages and pop-ups before you can actually leave the site.

I don't like those hovering pop ups either.

Usually I just hit the back button as soon as I see them. Occasionally, I will actually look for the [x] to close it.

They might increase conversions on the opt-in side but I think that is mainly because a lot of people would not know how else to close that box (often the [x] seems to be intentionally hard to see or hidden).

Conversions on the other side, actually buying stuff, I'd expect to be lower than normal. But I never tried them so don't know if that is the case or not. But it just seems like it is not the best way to get a person on a list. I'd rather they join because they actually wanted to get more information through email.

Both pop-ups while exiting and pop-ups a minute or so after visiting/being on the website have been tested effective.

It doesn't matter if people say "I don't like them".
It is about what people are really doing, things they don't even notice.

    Cyber Regards.

Edit: I should also mention...while these pop-ups are proven effective.
It still matters what you put on the pop up!
List benefits and a call to action! Why not give it a try?

For me, this isn't about making the most money I possibly can no matter what the cost.

They are effective for what reason? Effective for adding a larger amount of subscribers to a list? That's what I've heard so far from marketers that use them...that's it though. The overall number of subscribers means nothing to me. It's the quality of those subscribers.

I know they add more subscribers to your list. That's been established. What's the effect on the sales end?

I don't used the lightbox or other pop ups on visit, but I do use a footer that scrolls at the bottom of the page using the DigiListBuilder plug-in.

I do use exit pops though on some of my sites.

The reason I don't use the entry pops is because I don't think people are very likely to opt-in before they even know me (or why they should opt-in).

    Just my 2 cents

That is exactly how I view them. When I arrive at a new site for the first time and the page all fades dark and this big opt-in box appears and essentially just locks me out of the site... my first thought is... whoah! come on dude I don't even know what you have to offer yet. I was trying to see if you offer quality information, what your writing style is like and maybe even figure out if you can be trusted or not. And before I even get a chance to see anything you are throwing this thing up asking me to opt-in to a list from someone I know nothing about? Cya!
