Aweber Allows Single Opt-In. But At What Risk?

Hey Warriors,

Double is working for me when people have been hanging around my website for awhile, get to know me, want some of my "stuff" etc.

But when it comes to impersonal PPC traffic or other sources... double opt-in is having very bad verification rates.

So I'd like to switch.

I have Aweber, but thought you couldn't do Single-Opt-In. So I just purchased an account with 1ShoppingCart...

Then I went back to Aweber, and realized, I could just throw a switch and all of a sudden... poof! I've got Single-Opt-In working.

Pretty interesting...

But then I've got this thought in the back of my mind...

Can Aweber just all of a sudden throw the switch back on me and force everyone to double opt-in whenever Aweber feels like doing it?

Basically... Is there any risk to doing Single-Opt-In with Aweber specifically?

I'm pretty familiar with the debate over Single vs. Double in general. But I don't know about specifically Single-Opt-In risks in relation to Aweber.

Thanks for any insight.

I really appreciate it.

  • if they did flip the switch back you could always just send the emails yourself from a self hosted version or email sender, you'll already have the email addresses

during the campaings both mccain and obama sites only used single optins

If you get too many spam complaints, they'll force your account to be double-opt-in.

      Thanks KirkMcD and digitalproductreporter!

Does anyone know what specifically "too many" spam complaints means?

And has anyone done the Single-Opt-In thing with Aweber only to find out that they suddenly are forced to go back to Double?

    Hi Sean,

My take on it is that single opt in is great for customers and double is better for straight sign ups. Not sure why you would use it for PPC.

I think with Aweber, you have to get it to be single opt in first. Once it's set to double, I don't think you can change it back. Not positive on this.

The only issue is Aweber takes SPAM complaints very seriously with single opt in, so it could create a problem if someone complains.

May want to contact them for clarification. I would send an email instead of live chat. LC doesn't do real well lately.

    Thanks,

    John
