I am not here to keep secrets, I have a strategy that might be a good one but while I am in the process of making it happen Its nice to hear some feedback so...

My plan is to design a personal portfolio flash site, and print business cards that show local businesses my site and gather up some clients. Design, maintain, and host their sites...Sound good?? With the money I make I can invest in getting my sites more traffic and expand my profits!

Does anyone have experience with making money this way??

Not really sure what you mean.

You will make a portfolio website of what? Of other websites? Then you will host, design and maintain their websites aswell? Just not sure what you're aiming at here...

Some people do offer website design services to local businesses as their business model.

What I found when offering that particular service is that the most common response is "my brother in law takes care of our website."

Most website design companies don't offer any kind of 'marketing' of the websites they build, which does just about nothing for the business owner and leaves him with a bad taste in his mouth about "The Internet."

If you want 'clients', you need to sell them on things that will

        Make them money
        Save them money
        Save them time.

Your plan is valid, but you need:
          • Get enough visibility in the search engines so that clients will find you. Flash sites are not the best ones in terms of SEO...
          • Market your site/services. You can use AdWords or other advertising methods, as well as join Freelance Marketplaces, such as oDesk and Elance.
          Good luck!

If your aim to gain traffic is from your carding and word of mouth going direct to your URL then it sounds fine.

If your aim is to optimise your website int he future then I would steer well clear of flash and start optimising it for your required traffic from the first building block of your site.

I offered a Free Website setup to one part of a business, with the referrals in mind, then whilst chatting about it I got asked to do a set of sites for 2 other departments and a customer who happened to be there also wanted yet another more simple website.

      GIVE and YOU shall receive.

      I give 1, get 5.

But this method is offline nobody from google needs to know about this site...

I am going to make a beautiful dynamic flash site print the url on a business card... go to businesses that have crappy or no web site and try to make a couple thousand and use that money to invest..

Sounds like a good plan. Go door to door, you would be surprised at how many businesses would be receptive to this. If you do a nice job, they'll tell their friends and on and on and on. It is kind of sad that in 2011 most small business websites suck but that is good for you I guess.

Yeah thank you I have seen numerous businesses in my town who don't even have a website and the few that do the design is terrible so I feel like this might be a good idea...

The business cards isn't really relevant. Basically they're about getting the word out about yourself.

So you're trying to host and create websites for offline businesses that are clueless and/or don't know where to start.

Going door to door, when you eat at a restaurant talk to the manager, hand them a flyer/business card and see if they're interested. Meeting face to face > calling on phone. Or you can call then schedule a meeting. Real face to face builds trust.

You will need to explain to them what you can offer, the prices, time frame, benefits, and how you are better than others. I prefer everything paid at once and then you finish everything the owner wants in a certain time frame. Working by hours/time doesn't work too well. Then if they want to add anything else, you can have "upsales" and add more things, create content, or they might even want you to manage the whole thing for them.

    Good luck.

You'd want to do more than just hand out a business card. Try and get just 15 minutes of their time where you can sit down and show them stats of how many people are searching for services they offer. Monthly search volumes etc.

        1. Show them hard evidence of the opportunities they're missing out on.

        2. Then offer them a solution.

Showing people that you can make and host their own sites is fine but you must first reason out why they must avail of your service when they can still conduct business even without a website. Its a matter of the sense of need than a want.
