Your web site sucks and YOU suck and I hate you

I just had to share this one, because it made me almost laugh out loud...

I was checking my e-mail earlier, and an e-mail came in with the following subject line:

"Your web site sucks and YOU suck and I hate you"

At first I thought this was a spam message, but I took a look inside and it turned out to be a legitimate e-mail message. In the body of the e-mail this unfortunate soul went on a diatribe, ripping my Web site for poor design and usability, ripping my overpriced product for being a lame ripoff of someone else's, and ripping me for being an idiot.

Sadly, that's not enough information for me to go on if I want to make things right with my customer, so I wrote back and asked him which of my Web sites he was referencing (after all, I have about 50 of them).

Well, a few hours later I received an answer (calmer this time), but as it turns out, the Web site and product he's so upset about aren't even mine. I wrote back, pointing out the misunderstanding, and told this fellow that even though the site isn't mine, I'd do whatever I could to help him out, if possible.

He replied again and this time quite sheepishly, asking me to take all the names that he called me and turn them around and point them squarely at himself.

Even though the whole thing started out badly, the result of the entire exchange made me chuckle. I also wondered: have you ever been mistakenly confused for some other online marketer?

I don't have any similar story to share yet, but would probably have plenty already if I had not opted to use a pen name in all my online endeavor.

You see, I've been blessed enough to share my name with a porn producer that owns a couple of websites, on top of producing movies ---- and who happens to live in the same town as I do.

It was easier for me to just start using a pen name and avoid all the "sticky" situations.

      Lol Steve!

      Chris,

Who else would have deleted that message unread?
      Not me.

I'd be interested to see what they have to say, then I'd delete it lol.

Seriously though, webmasters can learn a ton off of POed visitors. I know I learn more about what will help my visitors, and get them to stay that way.

      esr,

That's sort of true. I always heard if they like the site they tell 1 friend, and if they don't they tell 100 other people they don't like it.

What a great lesson in customer service. I worked in customer service for 13 years before I started my online business. You handled it exactly right, faxinator.

It's not always easy, but they say (something to the effect of) a happy customer will tell 1 friend, but an unhappy customer will tell 10.

Thanks for posting this. It actually made me laugh out loud.

    • haha I've gotten a few like that before. Mostly in reference to my network marketing business though.

People are so silly sometimes. I especially love it when I get someone who's like

"TAKE ME OFF YOUR LIST YOU SPAMMER I MAKE ALL THE MONEY I NEED YOU DON'T KNOW ME BLAH BLAH BLAH"

Um first of all you might want to check out the handy dandy "unsubscribe" link at the bottom of all my emails and secondly you might want to remember that YOU signed up to get them in the first place.

Sounds like you handled it well though so good job.

I doubt someone like that who uses ALL CAPS and doesn't grasp the concept of the unsub link is making much money at all, at least not online.

Let me guess- the address ended with aol.com, right?

I always enjoy getting angry TAKE ME OFF YOUR #!#@!# LIST e-mails from people who double opted in to start with and chose not to use the clearly marked and prominent unsubscribe link.

But there are a lot of angry folks in this world and, as marketers, we find ourselves on the receiving end of their free-floating rage from time to time. Not to worry, by the time we're done reading the e-mail, they're off berating someone else.

Yeah, I've had lots of people confuse me with other "Chris's" in the IM market.

And same goes for my pen-names in other niches.

    Funny how it happens...

    -Chris

P.S. I think this happens a lot when you're in markets where email marketing is the primary medium. Because if you share the same name with someone else in their inbox, it could be easy to make that mistake...

Back in about 1997, when I was first starting out, I tried the "spam" thing. Actually made some money, but I digress....

I got a lot of hate mail, but one gentlemen actually wrote, "If I hear from you again, I will kill you and your family."

He then went on to quote things I had written in newsgroups. Completely UNRELATED newsgroups, too, that I frequented just for my own amusement.

To this day, I don't know how he got all that info on me, but I tell you what, I NEVER spammed again. He scared me good and taught me a very valuable lesson.

When I first started out I was in an MLM (I won't mention which one) and at my sponsors suggestion was using purchased lists for my AR.

I strongly urge that you DO NOT use purchased lists. I got a lot of emails stating that I needed to remove their minor children from my list.

Again, there were unsub links in the emails. I don't think people truly understand them, or they don't scroll all the way to the bottom of the email.

Ah you gotta love em, lol

I remember a customer who left us a very nasty voice mail years ago because he was having trouble downloading after he purchased. Now this came in 2 minutes after his first, second, and third support emails which were exactly 2 minutes apart and less than 2 minutes after his order.

This fellow ripped us for having lousy customer support etc. Never mind that he was actually looking at the thank you page when we called him back just a couple of minutes later. We told him to click the link that said download now.

We had this guy fixed up within 30 minutes of his order and he still wasn't happy. Some people just prefer to be this way. We actually remove customers like this from our lists so that we don't have to mess with them as much as they tend to be time vampires so to speak.

We put this guys message online and used to listen to it from time to time. It's been at least a couple years since I heard it but I'll try to dig it up and post it in this thread it's hilarious.

I can't see why people get so upset about little stupid things like this.
Its good to help them if you can, but some of these people don't seem to want help because they are too upset. If you deliver quality (which I recommend) you won't have to worry about getting as much angry emails and more mistaken emails from people having a bad day or something.

I had a similar experience - I received abusive email after email, name calling and effing from a guy on my mailing list who had wanted to be deleted. SOmehow it had screwed up, so in the end I called his mobile. Amazingly, the most mild mannered guy answered, was very sheepish when I explained who I was and why I was calling him! It turned out OK in the end but I hated that first email!

      esr,

Newsgroups? Man, some of those people were NUTS!

I was a newsgroup moderator for a while. (Co-founder of misc.business.moderated, and occasional mod for misc.business.marketing.moderated.) I'm still on a list that was formed for newsgroup mods who wanted to discuss spam-related issues, although it's more email-focused now.

There used to be some seriously deranged psychopaths haunting Usenet. Nasty, scary, matriarchal fornicators. A lot of them claiming to be on the side of light.

These days, you mostly only find them in Spam-L and The Newsgroup Which is Not to be NANAmEd...

I've always been pretty fanatically anti-spam. Back in those days, I probably had more "confirmed kills" (sites and accounts known to be shut down based on my reports) than any other marketer. I saw what was coming. (I predicted botnets back in, IIRC, 1997.)

Despite that, I never threatened people over spam. I got my share of death threats, and late night phone calls, and list-bombings, and FFA bombings and blah blah blah. All the usual stuff. Occupational hazard.

These days, I would "threaten" one or two. But only after I'd done something horribly painful and socially stigmatizing to them, without them seeing it coming. Botnet operators, mostly. And (other) phishers.

They make the spammers of '97 look like benevolent children.

I had a similar experience with a dude who had bough the product through his own affiiate link then refunded it after having downloaded everything and then took the time to email and tell me how much he didn't like it...in very broken english!

I had to laugh....imagine being so cheap to buy through your own affiliate link when you already know you are going to basically steal the product and then take the time to write an email to ease your conscience....

      too funny.
