Do you dare show your face?

I recently added a video to my Fiverr.com gig (it's currently pending confirmation before being added) and as it is my FIRST ever video it took me about 7 takes before I was happy with it.

So my question is - do you ever post videos of yourself, either for your blog or for other promotional properties, online? If not, why not?

I pushed myself into this as I feel my gig could do with the extra information to make it stand out from the rest. I also hope that one day the admins feature it for a week or something as the service is relatively unique.

If you have posted promo video in the past - do you have any tips or examples? Looking forward to seeing/hearing what people think!

  • When shooting video, the two main things you want to look for is

    A) Make sure you have proper lighting, it can make a HUGE difference in the final product.

    B) Try and get the best video camera you can for the money. And, if you have to use a webcam when you are just starting out, make sure you spend the extra $50 and get a full HD webcam.

Walmart has M$ widescreen HD webcams for $50 and $80 right now.

      @OP-

People buy from people. I would recommend to add in your own personal factor

Yeah I would encourage anyone and everyone to pick up one of those miniHD camera's. They are inexpensive and I can get results out of it that are strikingly close to my $800 canon camera.

No excuses when it comes to that. Now back on topic!

The only thing I don't particularly like about showing my face on video is that I work in multiple niches and sell multiple products in those niches.

It's difficult for people to believe that you are an expert in EVERYTHING so you could potentially lose some credibility there.

For Fiverr, I don't see any problem with this.

In fact, I would like to extend a "Congratulations!"

You have gotten over a fear so many people have and ventured into the realm of online video.

    That's pretty cool, man.

Exactly my thoughts. That's why I signed a contract with a guy and he's basically the face of my new niche business. However, it's risky if you're putting someone else in charge, you never know what can happen and branding your business around someone else might backfire. That's why I'm trying to somehow introduce another guy to my list, just in case something happens...

I've done a few videos where I show my face and I think it's very important for your customers and your list to actually see your face. That's how they'll remember you.

I did a few testings with two relatively small lists (263 and 240 subscribers) and the emails that I sent to them were the same, expect that to one list I send the first three emails with links to my videos while the other list got just text.
The percentage for unsubscribing was way higher for the list which didn't get to see me and my videos.

That is very interesting. So I guess that videos are a good way to get more people to stay on your list....

Thank you for sharing the results of your testing. The fact that your subscribers took the time to click on links show they are 'involved' with you and your site, too, doesn't it? Or did the list getting "just text" also have to click on something?

They both got the same emails but in the beginning I sent a list to a blog post which contained a video and others to a blog post without the video. I did that for the first 2 or 3 emails (can't remember exactly) and afterwards the list which got access to the videos was way more active. Higher open rate, higher click rate and more sales

Thanks for the detailed explanation! Now I get a clear picture of what you did, how you tested. Thanks again!

Nope. But I have hired several models from ModelMayhem.com for promotional purposes and its been a breeze.

I have a background in video production and my ass belongs most definitely behind the camera.

For a majority of the niches I market in, the hired model is the "face" of the site/product. It works. Well.

A well done live video will set you apart from the competition...most people are too scared to do so....Congrats!.....i Regularly send out live videos to my list, my lists responsiveness has gone through the roof since doing so over the last year or so. Keep it up, the more and more you do it the more natural it's going to feel (obviously)

I only have my face in my wf picture now but have not yet done videos with my face in it because I have not had to yet.
This sure could establish an emotional connection with the buyer because they feel they know you yet it could also backfire if they don't like your hairstyle or the way you dress. This is true whether you believe it or not.

I don't show much of my face outside of my social network profiles. But it's not like I'm that private with showing my face. When I start selling my own products, I may make use of self-branding, although not to an extreme. But it makes sense that people like to know they are dealing with real people.

It depends if I got paid, I would but otherwise I wouldn't for privacy and security reasons.
