What's your best strategy for building a list?

If you had to give one, pointed piece of advice for building a list -- what would it be?

Also, it would be helpful to provide some metrics against your advice to shed some light on your credibility. i.e. This strategy allowed me to grow from X to Y subscribers within Z timeframe.

Thanks.

I've heard of this method but not tried it. It sounds awesome though! I think Willie Crawford uses this method all the time. Thanks for reminding me!

        What you and HP said

Basically, get others to assume all of the risk (in testing what method is
effective) and take on all of the work, and build you a list of proven buyers!

I'm not sure if it's the "best" strategy, but it's certainly one of my preferred.

$7 Dollar secret script or RAP will allow you to do this method, and it can be very effective as a list of buyers is very powerful compared to a list of subscribers.

Which would you prefer a list of:
        200 buyers or list of
        2000 subscribers?

Make sure the product you are selling provides value and helps the customer.

Build your list by siphoning subscribers from other peoples' lists.

Seriously, it is possible to build your own niche list rather quickly through leveraging relevant content to authoritative publications with large readership audiences. My marketing model builds warm relationships with my targeted prospects long before they visit my website, subscribe, or make a purchase. This is accomplished through regular contributions of articles (or article syndication), which carries with it a perceived endorsement by publishers to their readers/subscribers. Depending upon the exclusivity or prestige of the publication, such subtlety is very powerful, resulting in quite substantial conversion rates.

The ultimate in article syndication is to consider your reading audience as a virtual email list. An authoritatively personable writing style can build relationships with these readers just as if they were already subscribed to your own list. And rather then bribing them with a freebie to "opt-in", they may often buy directly based upon the resulting credible recommendations, and simultaneously opt-in for additional products. This is article marketing at its finest, and IMNSHO beats any other list-building method all-to-hell.

Building lists of buyers effectively prequalifies subscribers for additional marketing, and weeds out the "tire kickers". Admittedly, some sales may be lost by not spending time to "build relationships" with freebie seekers, but in this marketing model the "relationship-building" period is considerably shortened by leveraging the existing warm relationship of publishers with their reading audience and subscribers through article syndication. And especially in the most highly competitive (read most lucrative) niches, article syndication may well be considered as the sine qua non of marketing. I have often recommended an excellent, timeless classic which details this marketing model: Turn Words Into Traffic.

My strategy is to build a profitable sales funnel and go for solo ads, swaps and other media buys.

I can grow my list very fast with these strategies and even make a good amount of sales.

Solo ads are good for building the list but you have to convert them into buyers.. On the other hand, "Product Creation" with %100 affiliate commissions is extremely powerful..

Solo Ads! Fastest way to build up a list, but it's not free.

I was able to get 1,000 subscribers in a month using just solo ads.

After you get a 1000 you can start ad swapping and keep climbing.

    Good Luck

Solo ads are a good strategy.

However the best way is to give away something of value for the opt in.
Access to tips subscription, free ebook, free software, PLR (public label rights) products etc.

If you can have some sort of viral component to these, that would be great.
For example, have an alternative incentive list that delivers and give when people promoter your product with an affiliate link.

This actually does work with free product promotion, if the incentive is good enough.

I would recommend creating one killer piece of content that you give away for free and then, market the hell out of it!

I created a 10 week Internet Marketing course that is probably better (I'm bias) than the majority of the crap that is out there. I give this away for free in return for the visitors name and email address.

Make sure you take your time and find out exactly what your target audience is looking for, then create that free content.

Create a nice squeeze page, then start promoting it in the forums, blogs, ad swaps, etc...

    Good Luck!

The fastest way in my experience to build a list is by creating a Free WSO about an IM niche that you are passionate about. It could be a brief report or video about your research into that area and what are the findings that you have uncovered.

    All the best!

Don't imagine that squeeze pages are necessarily going to be the best way to collect the email addresses, because they're typically not (and only the people who reliably split-test it, measuring the right parameters - which don't include "list size" - realize it): http://www.warriorforum.com/main-int...ml#post7939758

And that's what separates the winners from the losers!

Just imagine multiplying your efforts by a factor of 100: 5 years, 30K subscribers, 200 sales <-- and that's without tweaking anything and not accounting for the very likely statistical inaccuracy of the calculation.

With constant testing and tweaking over the course of 5 years, you would improve your conversion rate substantially. After 5 years, you would probably be making a full time income from your list of 30K.

But, as I said, that's what separates winners from losers. Stop thinking you are doing something wrong. Work on improving those numbers by improving your processes.

If I could go back again to start building a list,
    my advice would be -

    Be unique.

Be yourself and stand the **** out.

As you may or may not know, a little portion of your customers and subscribers will be responsible for most of your income.

    20/80 rule

These 20% can ONLY exist if you CREATE them.

And to create them, you need to be yourself, be unique, become the USP and embrace the fact that alot of your customers AREN'T going to like you.

After a while, you'll have a list made ONLY of people who will pay you.

That's when you'll really see massive open rates, clicks rates and most improtant, sales!

      This is a great point.

You see people promoting the same squeeze page, with the same copy, and the same product -- like empower network.

The problem is, since everyone is using the same thing -- the competition is VERY HIGH!

To eliminate a lot of this -- simply create your own unique squeeze page, or rewrite some of the copy in your follow up emails to express your own unique voice.

People only buy from people they "know, like, and trust." So try to share as much detail about yourself, and explain what has worked for you and what has not.

You will see a huge increase in open rates, and sales.

Don't use tired squeeze page templates. This advice alone will make you stand out. Instead, use CONTENT to get list members.
