How do you choose your niches?

I'm new to IM. Have set up only 1 site so far to get my feet wet in article marketing. I picked a niche in the health and fitness area, I won't say specifically which one.
During my research, there seems to be some contrasting opinions regarding picking a niche.
I've read that it's best to pick one which interests you or you're knowledgeable in, which makes complete sense to me.
However, this was debated by another opinion, which states that doing that is useless if it is not in demand. Better to choose something that people want. This also makes perfect sense.
I am a bit torn here. What works for you?

A simple suggestion --- if u r new to niche and IM- - dont jump to health. Its big in volume but tough to crack on .

I chose health because I've been working in healthcare for 6 years. As you can see I've decided to follow something that I know about, but I am unsure if it will be profitable for me to apply this technique to all my future projects.

I'm sure there's many micro niches that you can target.

Start out with some low competition ailments...

Google keyword tool + Lots O Interwebs research.

You need to know that people are searching for what you want to sell, and then you need to make sure that there isnt already much competition or that there is plenty room left amongst all the players.

This is the best thing to do.

Start with a niche in which you have EXPERIENCE.

Regard "choosing a niche" you can think of any PROBLEMS people have been asking either offline amongst your friends or relatives or online in discussion forums, blogs and social media sites.

Regard "discussion forums" use this AWESOME site to find killer.profitable niches:

Then choose sub niche, health > skin care >> cellulite >>> a particular cellulite cream with preferably rather medium or high demand (lots of searches) and plenty of products to fill the demand (need to rotate products unless it's well known brand or popular brand) and with less competitor or less strong competitor.

Switch cellulite product to something you know very well. That means you only probably make about 1 pages of product review, several additional pages about 5 or so and the usual privacy policy, terms, and so on. And drive traffic through SEO. It's not hard to make and it's not hard to optimize but the hard part and the key is to get the keyword research right and it's not 100% profitable because you still don't know if the particular product
is selling well or converting well or no till you are on top 5 of SERP and start getting targeted traffic. But at least you will learn all the basic.

Millions of affiliates do exactly like this.

So it is better to go with something I know about?
I was very enticed for some time to start a niche in electronics, specifically an in-demand gadget, but I hesitated because I knew nothing about it. I know I can always research but it is harder to talk about something you're not interested in.
    Thanks for your answers.

Eben Pagan suggested to ask three questions in order to evaluate a possible niche:

    1. Is there a massiv pain or an irrational passion?
    2. Are those people actually proactivly looking for a solution?
    3. Are there few or no perceived options?

Eben would enter the market only if he gets a yes 3 times.

    hope it helps,

    tim

I look for niches where the market has a problem. Then I find products or create my own to solve that problem. I've never really cared too much about search engine competition (but have built sites based on that alone before) because even if competition is high there are other ways to promote to the market--namely forums and facebook fan pages.

Offering a solution to a problem is one of the easiest ways to start making sales quickly.

You're going to fail. If you're afraid of failure then you do not belong in the Internet Marketing Business. Period.
