I can't believe my eyes so I just want to clarify here.

From Amazon's affiliate page: Personal computers (both desktops and laptops) have advertising fees capped at $25.

So does that mean even if I manage to sell a $2,000 computer, the most I will get from that sale is $25? What is this lame bullcrap?

Also, according to this image:

Does that mean in order to get a commission rate of 8.50%, I need to sell at least 3131 products/month?

The part I'm wondering about is the "advertising fee" part. Is that another way of saying commission or is it something else?

Your advertising fee is your commission, they range from 4 - 15%. The chart you show above does not include some categories which go up to 15%.

At the beginning of the month you start at 4% for every item shipped.
Once you reach 7 items you receive 6% including the items you previously sold that month.
So for example if you had sold 111 items you would get 7% on everything that month.

Exception: Items from "Electronics Category" are always capped at 4% no matter what your sales volume. And as you have noted computers are capped at $25.

So in this case, the $25 cap is correct? That even if I sell a $1,000 computer, I'm only getting $45 even though 4% of that is $40?

Amazon is horrible in my opinion. I've just had bad experiences with the whole thing that makes me completely hate it. The commission is way to low, the stats suck, blah blah blah. I no longer use amazon.

  • Yes there are caps on computers and if you sell a $4000 computer you are only going to get $25 Part of the reasoning, is there is slim profit margins in PC sales of course with Macbooks and other Apple products the profit margins are higher. But across the board the profit margins are not that high.

Also consumer electronics there is a max 4% commission structure in place, so be aware of that. Just like anything else, you're asking the right questions, you just need to be aware of their rules and be smart about what you are choosing to promote.

Me personally I would never spend my time and energy promoting any PC product outside of netbooks on amazon, as 2.5% on a $1000 laptop is just not worth the time and energy to SEO or even worse buy paid traffic for.

PS: For the tiered commission, yes you have to do that many sales in the given calendar month. The nice thing is they give you a pretty big increase from 4 to 6% for only selling a couple more items, which is pretty generous.

Of course there are other retailers on networks like CJ that pay ever more.

I agree with Kevin. It's not worth the time and energy - why not put the time and energy into selling expensive things that have more like 50% commission?

I personally just can't bring myself to sell Amazon products. I haven't really understood the appeal, as the commissions are low, and there are endless affiliate programs out there that are hugely rewarding if you put the legwork in.

Yes, commission is low but Amazon has all the products to offer for customers. My site promoting books is selling home tools, car wash, detergents, and other products... and I'm happy with the result...
