What Email Open Rates Should You Aim for?

I started my first email marketing campaign about a month ago, and I would like to know what kind of open rates you guys aim for? I've posted my stats for my first 4 follow up messages below:

Follow Up 1 - 58% Open Rate
Follow Up 2 - 41% Open Rate
Follow Up 3 - 39% Open Rate
Follow Up 4 - 37% Open Rate

Obviously there's always room for improvement, but would you be happy with those numbers?

The open rate percentage figure you get depends upon
a number of factors including the market you're targeting
as well as the autoresponder service you're using.

Here's some open rate research data from MailChimp and
it's based on over 570 million e-mails sent within various
    industries:

    Research | MailChimp (no affil.)

Only use your own open rates as a relative guide for the
performance of your own e-mails rather than trying to
compare figures with other e-mail marketers.

A better thing to track is actual sales rather than just
looking at open rates and click-through-rates as not all
opens and clicks are created equal.

    Dedicated to mutual success,

Good hell that's impressive. The niche is a big factor. My weight loss e-mail marketing has a lot lower open rate than my other niches. I suppose it's due to the competitiveness of the market.

    Those are really good results.

Just looking at my open rates for my newest product buyers list and I've got:

    1. 109%
    2. 46%
    3. 44%
    4. 39%
    5. 57%
    6. 40%
    7. 40%
    8. 44%
    9. 36%
    10. 40%
    11. 38%
    12. 44%
    13. 36%
    14. 34%
    15. 35%

Open rates and click-thru rates tend to gradually decline the longer the subscribers been with you.

That's why you should put your best performing (in terms of $ gained) messages close to the front. But don't forget to intersperse that with good content to avoid burning the relationship immediately.

Those are pretty good rates. This is just about what I am getting but I am getting a tad less.

P.S. - My point? There's *always* room for improvement.
