If a guarantee was more than a refund policy

I was just reading a press release from an SEO company that was guaranteeing a top 10 Google ranking. They claimed they were the only company who could do this (the guarantee) and it made me laugh.

But it also got me a bit annoyed.

Until I started reading MMO product sales pages I thought a guarantee was something more than just a refund policy; that it implied someone would take responsibility for something or was promising something.

It would be interesting if someone bought an internet marketing course with a guarantee (but not the upsell that actually has the information they need ) and after 30 days of pointless toil asked for not just their money back, but reimbursement of the value of their time, energy and frustration.

Rant over. Take from it what you will.

  • There are IM guarantees like that - and they're a good selling point.

I've seen marketers like Jason Fladlien often use the 'Double Money Back Guarantee' - where all the customer has to do is to take action and apply the steps. If they don't get the results advertised, and can show that they've taken action, they're entitled to double their money back.

Of course very customers do get refunded, because it's always the 'take action' bit that causes the problem. The vast majority of products work for people who are willing to put the time and effort in.

When someone says that they are the only company out there that can guarantee you top 10 Google rankings, they are lying to you. That is one thing that you can not guarantee.

When someone says that to you and promises that, RUN AWAY as fast as possible.

If someones offering a guarantee to get you on the first page of Google, unless that person is a founding member of Google, they are lying.

Alot of people use guarantees in this business in order to promote trust in what you're selling. No ones going to offer a money-back guarantee on a product if they didn't believe the majority of their customers would be satisfied with their purchase.

A lot of companies are offering: you get page 1 on Google for your keyword, then you pay. Much better than promising something you don't know you can do.

Dream on. There are far too many variables when it comes to succeeding at anything, much less IM, for anyone to guarantee success. Not even Ivy League school like Harvard, Yale or Princeton do that, so why would some IMer who is trying to sell a course?

Face it, many IM newbies want something for nothing. They want to put up a crappy web site, use someone else's creativity (via an affiliate, some penny a word articles or free consulting), get free traffic, and they expect to get rich quick. They don't realize that IM is a business like any other and it requires a serious investment of time, money and talent to succeed.

People who want to get into IM should not expect a guarantee that they will succeed. They need a reality check--most have impossibly unreal expectations.

Legaly if you are guaranteeing 100 dollars each day from your system, you have to pay him 100 dollars each day - what he makes from the system.

So if you guarantee someone will make 100 dollars each day, and they only make 25, you are stuck paying 75 each day for the rest of your customers life.

My take on this is that a Guarantee such as one where you get double your money back actually increases the conversion rate. However, you have to put the specific requirements out there so you don't get burned. Such as, "If you can prove that you've tried my methods and you didn't make at least $100 from them, I will give you double your money back." Just an example, but the point is that I think a guarantee is really what you write it out to be. You can make the requirements subtle, but don't be deceiving at the same time and don't make it too difficult for a person to return something. That's just bad business period!
