How To Use The Thanks Button in the Warrior Forum

by tpw
38 replies
I have been asked this before, so I wanted to give people the opportunity to see how it is done.

In the lower-right of each individual post, you will see 3-4 black buttons, but you must be logged into the Warrior Forum to see these buttons.

On the posts made by others, you will see: Quote, Multi Quote, Quick Reply, and possibly Thanks.

On your own posts, you will see: Edit, Quote, Multi Quote, Quick Reply.

One important note about the Thanks Button: You only get 25 of them in any 24-hour period.

If you are frequently grateful and give 25 Thanks within 24-hours, you will notice the Thanks Button disappearing from your post options.

The limit is not set on some arbitrary time schedule, but rather as soon as you are 24-hours out from a single Thanks Button usage, you will have an opportunity to Thank someone else.

The Thanks Button helps the forum reduce the practice of having to post, just to Thank someone for stating an opinion with which you agree or saying something you thought was funny.

The Thanks Button is your friend. Use it well.

EDIT: For the record, it is in bad taste to ask people to hit the Thanks Button for you.

People who openly ask us in a post or thread to hit the Thanks Button quickly lose credibility, and in a community like this, Credibility Is Everything.

Someone just sent an PM a few minutes ago.

Do new users not have access to the Thanks Button for a specific amount of time?

p.s. I don't remember. I have not been a new user for more than 7 years.

Last I knew, you can't see the thanks button until you've posted five times and I believe that is only countable posts (so test section and off topic wouldn't apply).

I think that's why we get so many "how do I" threads because they don't realize that it's a function they don't get right off the bat.

Of course, some of them could be because they're looking in the wrong corner of the post, too

You need to reach a specific amount of posts in order to see the thanks button. I am not sure but it is 20 posts

I almost thought you were merely going to tell everyone how to click the "Thanks" button as though it wasn't obvious. But you learn something new everyday, I didn't realize that you could only use 25 thanks every 24 hours.

One other drawback on the thanks button -

Sometimes I like to thank someone and then want to go back to that post later.

You can click on the "posts you've thanked" stats in your profile, but the only posts that will show are the ones on threads that you have actually said something on as well as thanking them. I wish it would pull up every thread I thanked on as sometimes things don't hit me until a later time when I want to go revisit something.

I wasn't aware of this, Jill. This is disappointing, as I've also been thanking posts that I want to revisit later. I'll try to play around with posts that I've thanked to see if I can find any that I didn't comment on somewhere in the thread.

I have never noticed that specifically. But I have noticed that you can only click back in time to see 20 pages of posts we have thanked.

There are only 25 posts per page, so by using the Thanks Button to mark posts, you can only ever go back in time 450 posts that you have thanked.

It reminds me of Google. There are umpteen million results, but Google will only let you see less than 1000 of the actual results.

Often times when I want to go find those posts, I hit Google with:

          *Disclaimer
I've searched thru a few threads and can't find the answer.
I'm not bitchin, whining or complaining.

Anyway, usually around here, there ARE practical reasons why something is done a particular way. After explanations, it almost always makes sense.

I ran out of thanks, yesterday thanking people for responding to John D's thread about KimW's situation, which some of us have been working on for awhile now.

The one thing I can't find in threads about the THANKS, is why there would be a limit on saying thank you, a limit on the thanks button.

Contrary to some peoples view there are some very valuable bits of information, selfless charity, and good offers, etc...and I like to say thanks.

It is indeed the least I could do.

          Thanks

          Jim

Because it can be abused by very bad people with ill intentions.

Even 25 thanks is a LOT for a one day period.

You can always come back the next day and fill in the blanks.

I got my "thanks" button after 1-2 posts last week, but up til then really scratched my head as to why I had none. That is, until I asked Bill about it. Such a wonderful feature! Thanks, thanks thanks!

Maybe I'm a little naive about this particular subject...maybe because I don't think like that...

Aren't there other rules to deal with that?

I very much thought that we were only allowed one account each anyway.

That sounds like lawmakers who are always creating new laws, to acknowledge that the police don't enforce the existing laws on the books to deal with a particular issue.

Strictly speaking, I don't think there's an actual rule about that. But if you're going to be stupid and use multiple accounts to thank yourself or put the same sig links for all your userids, then you'll probably lose all your accounts if someone notices.
