I first saw the reference to this article on WebmasterWorld through (another plug for) RSS reader. It gives some interesting insights into Larry Page as well as some of the Google history. Something well worth at least skimming through!

    Theres some false info there...the idea to scan all books did not come from Larry Page like the article suggests. It started first as a project at Project Gutenberg, then at the Internet Archive where Larry learned about it.

    It needs to happen. Schmidt was a necessary hire at the time, but his lack of focus on product has ruined the release of some really promising ideas at Google over the past few years - and even the core search feature has some aspects that are broken and over-complicated. He's a commercial guy, and right now Google needs a product/tech guy.
