Beating The Competiton

We all know that we are to assess the competition and find either a way you can do it better or find something that is overlooked etc. My question - what if your competition gives everything away for free (things you would charge for). How do you beat that? I'd like to know your thoughts! Thanks.

I believe that if your brand is strong enough, people will come to you even if they KNOW the other company is giving away for free what you charge for.

    For hamburger lovers...

Would you act on a free meal offer that you read on a flier from a hardly-known burger shack, or would you go straight to McDonalds for the same meal?

That would be true after your brand is established. But you have to get to that point first. You don't become McDonalds over night. So if someone doesn't know your brand from a whole in the wall and you set before them two options - free or pay - which one will they chose? I would think most likely the free option.

    Any other thoughts/suggestions?

  • you answered your own question

find either a way you can do it better
do it better and charge for it or give it free also but charge for upsells (support, addons, etc)

    Lisa,

Your competition can't be giving everything away - they must be earning money somehow.

Find out how they monetize their offerings, then figure out how you can do the same - only better, for your target market.
