Is this Genius or just a dirty little scam?

A relative sent me this link after she already purchased. At first I knew it was not a real news site, but it does look incredibly realistic. The fact that all the links go to the sales page does it for me. However, I would bet that this gets pretty good conversions because it appears to be a news site and therefore it automatically gives itself credibility, although underhanded in my book.

I started to ponder, is this a genius concept or is this just a dirty little scam that sucked the $97 from my relative? What do you think? Could a news looking website convert extremely well?

Since that is one of those scammy websites that mentions the person is from the IP addy area of the visitor (obviously fake) you should kill the live link and not give them any additional link juice.

All due respect to Bill's paranoia (j/k) I don't think
I can offer much of an opinion without seeing the site.

There is no difference in that or a FLOG. It's fake and therefore a scam.

I wasn't trying to prolong someones scam. I just couldn't believe someone would fall for this. I figured that fellow warriors would know this is a scam and see how unethical this site is.

I kind of like the "news" type of site though, just think there is a more ethical way to do it so your not infringing upon the belief that they are a news organization. There is a difference saying your affiliated with NBC and having a news type of site geared towards affiliated products with no affiliation. One is unethical (see the above link) and one is ethical.

If the site didn't try to use scam tactics or NBC, but was a news type of site geared towards the product, I wouldn't have a problem with it. Even though the product is crap in my opinion, but thats not what they did. They are assuming because of the NBC thing the reader will believe its an actual news story, therefore is credible. Very misleading and thats why I don't like this site personally.

There are far better ways to earn money online ethically then to scam people. Plus you can sleep good at night knowing that you are not breaking any laws or "screwing" people out of their money.

Personally I couldn't do this to people. It's blatantly ripping people off. I don't know how the people behind this sleep at night.

Trying to pull a fast one on people leveraging the comfort of NBC.

Send the site to NBC or even a C&D yourself.

Just looked at the site - without any doubt its a FLOG - however I must note that I found the news layout to look much more trustworthy then a normal sales type page.

Im not making any notes as to this being fake or not as this is clear - looking at it from a conversion angle then I think these guys might actually be experiencing a much higher conversion then usual - just because the design and news layout makes it look like a site you will pull your wallet out for and buy from.

So someone that hasnt had any experience with these type of sites and is not very clued on towards the filthy scams around the net then it would be very appealing to them and would assume the conversion much higher.

    Just my 2 cents

I've seen this type of thing a lot over the last few years. It's an old advertising concept, of course, with a modern twist. There are a few things that really push it over the edge, however -- the blatant NBC rip-off and the fact that they're using real reporters (without their permission).

They always seem to use the same French news anchor -- Mélissa Theuriau. She is hugely famous in France, and in fact, worldwide (because of her beauty). I have seen countless ads with her face advertising these types of websites in BIG NAME media outlets -- front page of Yahoo, major daily U.S. newspapers, etc. I'm sure she must know by now that her image is being used like this. (If she hasn't seen them personally, I'm sure she's been told.)

In short, ALL of these guys seem to use her image, so if you ever see her face pop up in some type of ad or "advertorial," you know straight off that it's scammy.

I have always wondered about who she is. You see her on all of these types of ads.

My mother inlaw came across a site like this, but it was for some diet stuff. She kept telling me its on the news so it has to be real. It took me about 20 minutes to convince her that it was a fake site. The site may be scammy but I bet they make a lot of sales based upon their fake credibility.

My guess is that NBC (and their slew of corporate lawyers) would really like to know that their name and logo are being ripped off - especially since NBC10 is the name of (at least) 2 genuine NBC stations. The NBC affiliates in both Philadelphia and Providence are called NBC10.

Talk about *blatant* copyright infringement... boy, some people are really, really stupid.

This took me two seconds to recognize it as a scam. I guess people that are gullible and not on the internet that much would be the only ones falling for this type of site.

      Adam,

To answer the question in your title... Why can't it be both?

Anyway, here's a useful tip for you: When something is deleted from one of your posts, and you didn't remove it, it was a moderator. In those cases, it's best to leave the deleted section out. Putting it back in, regardless of whatever change you believe might make it acceptable, is not the very best of ideas.

And before you ask, no. The fact that it was a live link is not the only reason that was edited out.
