How do I set up URL shortening with my own short domain?

Hi folks,

I recently registered dolr.tk for my personal finance blog to shorten the URLs. My question however is this: how do I implement this? I've been using services like owly and bitly, but I'd rather do it under my own system, both because it's safer and because it looks more professional to have my own short domain (the domain is short for dollar in case you didn't get it from looking).

I've seen a few plugins that seem to shorten based on your regular URL, but I want to use a custom short URL (my regular URL is quite long -- thepersonalfinancehelpcenter.com). I already have it pointing to my domain host but am not sure what to do from there. I tried setting it up with Bitly pro, but I couldn't get it to work and frankly, even if I could I think I'm best off doing it totally on my own.

Thanks for any advice.

Eric

You need to install a script that will translate the short-form URL and redirect it to the appropriate Web page. There are several scripts freely available, some of which are given at the site below:

Thanks for your help. I had one heck of a time figuring out how to do it. Then I found a Lifehacker article which seemed to make it easier, except that it didn't and then I finally found that there is actually one plugin for Wordpress which does the job automatically. It's la petite url. I'm in the process of testing it now. It turned out that Bitly did get the thing propagated to it in the meantime so now I'm waiting for it to unpropogate so I can see if the plugin works okay.

If you need any help installing or setting up one of the scripts rather than using a Wordpress plugin (which seems kind of weird to me), just let me know. I'd be glad to do it for you, free of charge of course.

Well let me see if the plugin works. If it does, I'll just use that since it seems easiest to me because I don't need to go somewhere else to grab my shortened url (the plugin places it automatically inside the blog post when I hit publish). If it doesn't work, I'll definitely be taking you up on your kind offer.

While I do know a lot about computers and know how to install Wordpress and the like, moving beyond that into coding tends to be more problematic for me (in spite of the fact that I have tinkered with programming the past. At one point or another, I learned Basic, Pascal and HTML coding). I guess I'm just getting old (at 37 ).
