Stop calling yourself an Internet Marketer if you ain't one!
Let me get more specific...
We all started in this hoping to be make some money off the internet, to attain the freedom and luxury of making money while we sleep and goof around, go on holidays, pursure our other passions and hobbies etc. In other words, we pursued the dream of becoming an IMer.
But over time, as weeks and months go by, we started to drop into the mindset of a product creator.
Yes you heard me right - Product Creator.
In my own opinion (and from personal expereince, after coaching over dozens of students in my coaching programs), many people in this market are actually product creators, NOT internet marketers.
Yes these 2 different scopes do have overlaps here and there, but trust me, they are worlds apart.
Many people who are into IM for quite a while often end up as product creators, mainly because they are thinking about how to create that perfect product to sell to the masses.
They think that to make good money in this, you have to have an out-of-the-world idea, and a killer product that will be "revolutionary". Also, those massive launches on clickbank by gurus make you think that you have to have a crazy revolutionary product to make money, because all those products being launched on CB everyday seem so awesome.
You know what, you are totally wrong!
I'm not dissing any of those gurus or launching a personal attack on any specific names, but many of the products on CB are total crap! Not all, but many are pure BS.
How then do they make so much money from their launches? Their marketing and salescopies.
Of course, i'm not asking you to follow their footsteps and create crappy products as well. That's the last thing i want to see happen. I personally believe in giving great value to your customers as well, but you have to stop thinking like a product creator, because that will keep you stuck in the "perfection" mindset.
You have to start thinking like an IMer.
Here's the difference in the 2 scopes, even though they may have slight similarities and overlaps...
Product Creator:
- Spends almost all of his time developing ideas and doing product research
- thinks of how to create a product that will be of quality to others
- ways to improve the product and tackle potential loopholes
- check out other products in the market and cover their weaknesses
- Keeps reviewing the product to make sure it is the best in the market
Internet Marketer:
- Has a decent product that delivers quality
- however, he focuses more on marketing and conversions
- he knows that to make real money, it's all about perception & packaging
- spends 90% of his time testing, tweaking, and improving the funnels
- remaining 10% of his time is then spent on making sure the product delivers quality.
As you can see, even though they overlap in some areas, but there's a distinct differnce in the 2 roles. That's where many people fail in this market and do not make money, because they spend too much time worrying about creating the perfect product.
As an INTERNET MARKETER, you should focus more on marketing instead. Shift your mindset to that of an IMer, not a product creator.
I'm not claiming to be some top-notch guru or marketer, but i dare say that this mindset has put me pretty ahead of the game and ahead of 90% of people in this community who claim to be IMers.
Myself, and almost all of my students, started with this mindset of a product creator. mainly bacause we were brainwashed by the tons of products out there that tell you to deliver awesome quality to others, while they themselves are actually delivering crap
In my opinion, if you're actually stuck in this product creator mindset and would like to make a change, here's what you can do:
- find a partner or setup a small team to be your product development brain
- they will do all the research, development, and creation for you.
- if you are not too keen on outsourcing yet, you can still do the product creation yourself, but remember not to get stuck in the "perfect product creation" mode.
- Having a decent product which delivers value to customers is good enough. No need to be out of this world and revolutionary! Too many stuff in this market are pure crap. Just having something of decent quality will make you stand out.
- Focus the rest of your time on marketing, cuz that's what you are, and also that's where the money lies.
- Spend time marketing, testing, creating conversion funnels, and thinking of new ways to create income sources etc.
- Remember, you are a marketer! Start acting like one.
In a nutshell, just a simple shift in mindset will totally change the way you do things. I see many people stuck in this frame, and thus they never make money because they are forever thinking of how to create that perfect product for the masses.
Catch yourself when you do this, stop it, and instead shift your focus to more of the marketing, conversions, and sales funnels. You will see a massive improvement in your profits
