Self Hosted Fund Raising Page

Hi Warriors

I'm not sure where or who to approach on this. I want to raise funds for the recent Japan disaster appeal. I wanted to create a running journal on a blog site and combine it with a donation page. That donation page could look something like this:

What I was hoping for is an ability to host my own donation page with the people and their donations listed as well as my running journal (training). I was thinking of creating my own script and somehow connect the payment side with the charity group like the Red Cross. I need to have a think about the backend (paypal?).

If I asked for a script to be created on freelance sites, what specs or consideration should I include? Love to hear your thoughts. Thanks!

    Paypal has some VERY strict rules about collecting money for charity. Several folks here at the WF have run into difficulty with them over the issue of collecting for fundraisers. They do this to protect contributors from fraudulent "charities."

    Start with them to find out exactly what they require or else you could get your Paypal account shut down.

      Thanks for sharing this with me. I'll keep the fraud aspect in mind when I speak to Paypal. I'm based in Australia and I'm not sure if they might even have a stricter requirement.

      Essentially, I'd like to do away with the middleman who provides a portal for people to create a fund raising page. I read in their terms that the charity group do not actually receive all that has been donated. For example, for a $25 donation, the charity group will only get $23.

      If I could create a payments transaction script and connect the payment directly to the charity group we want to support, they will get the maximum benefit.

      I'd like to create a running journal on a WP blog and also have my own fund raising page where visitors can see who donated how much to support my cause. I really like this self hosted concept as it give me control and helps with my own branding. Something like Run Tammy!

    I think Facebook and Paypal should work properly. Using facebook you can ask all your friends for charity easily. And when then like your charity, their friends will also see it instantly. So, get going.. best of luck. BTW, good thought for good cause..

    Have you checked out Crowdrise? That's the fundraising platform I'm on for what I'm doing right now, and it works beautifully. It's already set up, trustworthy, and accepts credit cards or offline donations. There's also good built-in promos (for instance, anyone who donates $16 to any cause gets entered to win an iPod, etc).
