I don't get social bookmarking

I have seen on several internet marketing and SEO videos that social bookmarking is a good way to build links but I don't understand it.

Surely you would need to have an already established social bookmarking profile that people are actively looking at and bookmarking your stuff too?

I'm not convinced that it is quicker than writing another keyword rich article to submit to Ezine or other?

Any clarification would be great thanks

Laura

    Hi Laura:

It is good to always have links to your site coming from a variety of sources such as articles, social bookmarking, web 2.0 sites, forum signatures etc.

There is a great site that I use that automates the social bookmarking process for you.

You should check it out. There is a free option too.

    No.

Automate your bookmarking using a service like ping.fm.

However, I don't recommend you to write articles and submit them to article directories.

It is much more effective to submit articles to blogs as a guest post. You will get the same amount of traffic from one article published on a blog like you would submit 15 articles to ezinearticles.com. This site is dead for internet marketing niche!

The idea is to have search engines notice a lot of links to your site from bookmarking sites. I think the effect on SEO is generally overrated, when it comes to bookmarking sites.

Stumbleupon is one that can be VERY powerful, however. Digg and reddit too.

I would rate quality article submissions way higher than social bookmarking, in terms of website traffic effect, stemming from search engines.

Just like article marketing, social bookmarking is another way to get backlinks to your site. It's a good way to diversify your linking pattern.

Does social bookmarking work? Yes it does.

Having said that, if you can crank out articles with fresh content then by all means go for it. Remember that there are many methods that people will say "don't work" because THEY could not make it work for them.

The best way to learn is to test and get the facts for yourself.

    Cheers!

I think social bookmarking in sites like digg, and folkd are great for getting your site indexed, but not great for backlink juice.

Social media sites like hubpages and squidoo and etc are a different story
