Thesis or Genesis Theme

Okay... I've researched my way into a corner and need some help. Am trying to decide on a new theme and am trying to find some presales support. Would be happy to buy through an affiliate link in return for some basic consultation. Would also be willing to consider thems other than Thesis or Genesis.

Anyone out there with some experience and/or an informed opinion?

Thanks!
chris

  • I've looked closely and used both.

I like Brian Gardner's work... from a visual perspective. His new stuff is much better on the back end.

I believe that for most people who figure out "hooks" that thesis is genius.

I believe you would do fine with either, but if I were voting I'd still give the edge to Thesis.

Presales support probably isn't going to happen. But there are some nice 3rd party sites that discuss how to modify sites with each.

A really cool theme that I like is flexsqueeze. You can basically customize any aspect of it. There is also a free version called flexibility 3. I use flexsqueeze on all my sites and can make it look like almost any theme. Thesis is good stuff though. Hope that helps.

From your choices, I would say Thesis...

I've worked with Genesis in the past and although they have a very helpful support and forum system..you need to get down to the codes if you want to edit something...

I came across the Headway theme yesterday and the videos looked enticing. You may also want to check it out if it fits your requirements.

    All the Best.

This is tough, i really, really like thesis, and yes i understand hooks (to some extent). But for some sites thesis simply doesnt work well. I want to re-design my weight loss site and now made in running on thesis - but there is something about it i dont like.

Genesis is an incredible "complex" theme and i am trying Genesis right now, mainly because of some really good looking child themes.

While Genesis offers less "styling options", it has more other options out of the box.

To be honest, Thesis can look VERY bland and all the skins for thesis (with the exception of blogskin skin maybe) look horrible in my opinion. VERY bland, very, very basic. This works on some niches, but not on others.

At this point i am tending towards Genesis but still trying all those features and widgets. I have seen Genesis based sites where thesis, in terms of "professional look" cannot even remotely come close.

      Chris, how technical are you?

if you're not, then neither theme. Because you'll need lots of hand-holding. They are not newbie-friendly themes, and of the two I find Thesis to be the most difficult to work with, and like George said, it can look bland.

Bang for the buck and backed by WordPress.org: WooThemes. That would be my choice.

I'm not super-duper technical, but not really a novice either. I've been using Thesis and I find that it lets you do a fair amount of things without having to get into the code. But there will still be some things you want to edit. And yes, it can look bland. But it's not that difficult to use, in my opinion. Everything that I've had a question about, I've been able to Google it and find out how to do it.

As a side note, I'm interested in checking out Genesis, a lot of those themes look pretty decent.

I've used the Genesis Agency theme for several of my sites, and they appear to have much better SEO results than my non-Agency sites. It's definitely an SEO-optimized theme. There is a learning curve for making changes, but their support forums are good and I usually get an answer within a few hours.

I haven't used Thesis at all, it may be just as good.

I prefer Thesis because it's easy and quick to use, plus it allows you to do so much with your blog site. It does take a wee bit to get the hang of it if you haven't used it before.

Okay... after a lot of research... I am settling in on the Headway theme. Both Thesis and Genesis seem to be a little finicky for my taste.

I bought Headway and despite hearing how user friendly, it certainly hasn't been for me. I'd be interested in hearing how it works out for you.

        Good luck!

Thesis is fairly easy and quick for the beginner to use, but at the same time it possesses many advanced capabilities and features that make it something you can grow into as you get better at creating WP sites. One thing that I like about Thesis is the great support you can get in-house, as well as from various bloggers and designers who interact a lot online about Thesis techniques, and its various subtleties. It can't really be all that bad, especially when Matt Cutts from Google and also Seth Godin like it?!

It's a tough decision for sure. None of them are what I'd call easy if you're not a coder. Genesis is supposed to have very "clean" code, so that's what I tend to use. But I'm still looking around at others.

Have you considered the 'catalyst' theme framework? I've not seen it mentioned in this thread yet.. I'm using it at the moment and finding it really, really, really excellent.

I would say I am quite well versed with wordpress and it's various theme frameworks, and from what I have worked with/seen, catalyst is by far the best.

    ^ Sounds like I work for them. I don't, I just think it's a great product

I have recently started using Genesis and have managed to make a few changes without any real issues. The support forum is great and there are step by step tutorials in there.

I would say it depends on how many changes you are thinking of making. If you like the standard layout and just want to change headers, colors and font sizes then that is not too difficult.

With Genesis you have several different options for layout and can even create landing pages.

I consider myself pretty new at using this theme and haven't run into too many issues. Anything new takes a learning curve if you are willing to take the time I am sure you will be fine.

Hope this helps with your decision.
