Is this possible with Wordpress?

I don't currently have any wordpress sites but would like to try out several templates and layouts. Is it possible to set up a test site without actually using a domain? Not sure which domain I want yet. I use hostgator. Thanks.

Is there a (simple) tutorial on this? My main reason for not doing WP thus far is the fact that I can't seem to wrap my head around it. I wanted to add a blog to several of my static sites anyway, so I think the subdomain is what that would involve, right?

Install Xampp on your computer. Then install Wordpress. Then do what you need to do.

Since the OP stated "without actually using a domain", so far this is the only solution that does that.

We are setting up Xampp to test out WordPress plugin development/modifications so we don't have to be online. This free app is available for Windows, Linus, Mac OS, and Solaris, and includes everything necessary to run WordPress on your own computer.

I think there are a few free hosting companies that will let you setup wordpress on one of their subdomains.

You could also setup a local server on your computer using xampp apache friends - xampp
This can be difficult to setup at first if you dont have much experience but can provide a great way of testing sites for the future.

The easiest would be what jeff said, if you have a hosted site you should be able to setup a test site in a subdomain.

I suggest that you set up a sub-domain where you could install Wordpress. You can upload as many themes as you wish into that one installation and switch between them to test etc.

In Hostgator is this done the same way I would set up a regular domain?

Just go to your CPanel, scroll down to your 'Domains' section and select sub-domains :-)

You could just use Fantastico to install WordPress in a subfolder of your existing domain. Once it's installed you use the WP Dashboard>Settings>General to specify the WP address (installation folder) and the site address (xyzdomain.com). You can then create a blank page called Blog (or whatever) and specify that as your posts page under Settings>Reading. If you don't specify this page as a child of another page, it will be available as a first level option on your page menu. If your theme doesn't nativley support menus you can easily create a custom menu.

Since you already have a hostgator account, just create a subdomain to test:

            1) Login to cPanel
            2) Scroll down to the Domains section
            3) Click on Subdomains
            4) Fill out the form shown with "test" as the subdomain and select any of your domains that you already have. That will create test.example.com if example.com was your domain.
            5) Go to Fantastico in cPanel and install wordpress on the new subdomain.

The problem with that is it can create conflicts with WP if you install WP in a subfolder of a site that runs WP already. Some servers will get confused with the rewrite rules and you might run into problems. That's why it's better to do is on a subdomain than a subfolder.

While we are also using Xampp, I currently have two test sites set up in subdirectories running WordPress. The only potential problem with using cpanel is that it seems to only install the latest version of WordPress. That might break some of the plugins you want to use/test.

I think the default WordPress setting is to disallow indexing which is great for testing, but not too helpful when the site goes live if the settings are not changed.

You can always use the free WordPress too. That's how I tested it out before I used it.
