Article Marketing - Is This Just Old Skool Enough To Work?

While all of us have opinions, I am interested in everyone's thought on this.

I've been doing article marketing for a while. I've tried different things and I'm not going to get into the whole direct linking thing but... my thought is this:

Would it benefit me to keep a few articles just on my site and not attempt to directly syndicate them? Would there be value in the eyes of SE's if there was a good amount of content that was available just on my site? I mean, I am sure that site scrapers and the like will come along, snag my content anyhow and dismember some of my stuff to use for their own twisted ways but... posting articles to directories is just getting to be a pita. I could write 4 or more decent articles in the amount of time I spend a day posting articles. This really isn't the reason but just a thought.

Would there be a long term benefit of keeping half or more of my content on my own site?

Yes that is a sound idea that deserves exploring.

In fact I believe it is always beneficial to have some original, not posted anywhere else content on your site.

You could even stop doing article directories altogether and put the articles on your site.

And you could set some articles on your site for syndication, but to only be syndicated from your own site.

Let people know that there are certain articles on your site that they can syndicate, then make it obvious to which ones that applies.

And notify publishers who have used your articles before that they can go to your website at any time to find content they would like to syndicate.

Why not? Even I have some content on my sites that doesn't go anywhere else.

The thing is, nobody can answer with certainty, without either "inside knowledge" from Google (and don't forget there are a few other search engines attracting signficant search volumes: its's not all Google although that's the one we always talk about), or by doing the most elaborate, sophisticated, long-term split-test of different sites within the same niche, which would be almost impossible to do ... :p

My results have also been good using this strategy. In fact, I tested not doing this on several of my sites and found that my traffic suffered. Normally, I place articles on my sites and link to those articles from other articles that I post on directories, other sites, etc.

I have not run long-term case studies, but my anecdotal "evidence" convinces me that doing so improves my bottom line.

I've been using this technique for quite some time now and it seems to be working well. Although I do like to send some out over onlywire to the social bookmarking sites and just skip the article directories altogether.

Can you just post the original content to your website first and let it get indexed by Google and other search engines. Then, spin the articles into readable forms (like a summary of your entire article on your main website) and place them on article directories.

I don´t understand why everyone is so obsessed by article marketing on this forum.
Writing content for your site is one of the best investments you can make for the site, for the following reasons:
1 - You increase your visibility in the search engines, firstly you have more content, secondly you pick up more long tail searches
2-You increase the authority of your site. Each page on the internet has some pagerank, and if you link the pages on your site strategically to your main landing pages and have decent navigation set up (think keyword anchor text links) you can boost authority of specific pages and increase rankings for those keywords. The links are not as poweful as external links, but I would argue they give you more value than links in duplicate content on hundreds of crappy article directories.
3- If you are actually writing stuff that might be of value to someone, you can attract links naturally.

Also, when building links to your site, you want a diverse range of ips, just submitting to the same crappy places as every other spammer is not going to help much, and in my view is a waste of time. Instead, I would seek out a range of better quality sites and try to get links from them. Guest posting on blogs that rank well in google is a better way to spend your time than writing articles for directories.
One decent link from a good site is worth hundreds of dodgy links, so it is worth spending more time getting them.

      Hope this helps!

I would not call it an obsession.

It is just that this is the forum where most of the article marketers hang out.

Article marketing, product creation and writing in general has always been an obsession of mine though so if you want to call me obsessed then have at it!

A bit off topic but, I watched "Tales From The Script" last night on Netflix. It deals with script writers in Hollywood. Great documentary that I highly suggest to anyone into writing. It was funny hearing these old, highly respected writers dropping the F bomb.

Of course it is. For all the reasons you give (and others). All of which are part of the fundamentals of "article marketing".

Absolutely. Also fundamental to article marketing, of course.

Just slightly surprised to see your surprise that so many people are obsessed by article marketing, when that's exactly what you posted about yourself?

Good post, though - thank you. The more people point out (in this case implicitly, by accentuating other things) that directories are only one minor part of "article marketing", the better.

When I really started going with IM last year I actually thought that the way to use article directories was to have articles that were not actually available on your site.

My thought was that, if someone finds it on say Ezine or Buzzle (when individual articles could make page 1 on the search engines), and they like it and click the link in the resource box, why send them to exactly the same content? That'd be kind of annoying.

So my first site consisted of short 400-500 word articles that were summaries of longer 1000-2000 in depth articles on my main site.

After reading up on duplicate content on WF and other places, and after parsing out fact from fiction, I decided to save myself some time and for my next site just use the same content on both the site and for the directories.

A few months down the road, both sites are getting about the same amount of traffic. But the interesting thing is that the first site, with exclusive content is *converting* much much better.

Now I know there are a lot of variables that can affect that, but I can't help thinking that having exclusive content does have a real impact on the overall experience of the visitor, leading to more sales.

So definitely, you need a place for exclusive content to live, and article directories are still great for casting a wide net back to where you convert.

Virtually all of the stuff on my sites is original, not sent to directories or syndicated. Sometimes I'll send derivative content out for syndication, but typically I'll keep it internal and syndicate other content.

The content I do syndicate I'll repurpose multiple times, for everything from PDF sites and article directories, to content backlink networks and freebie reports. That stuff isn't normally on my sites, but I do try to make sure that it is mostly high quality, not crap, no matter where it's going.
