Bluehost - slow loading?

For some reason, my Blueshost hosted sites started to load very slow. I reduced image sizes, but still slow.
Even inside my WP admin dashboard, everything seems to be slowly loading/updating...

Do you guys having the same issues?

Thomas

PS. I am seriously thinking of switching to Hostgator or something else...

How many WP plugins do you have loaded, you do notice they cut your sql queries quickly if you are on a shared hosting account.

5 or 6 plugins. I use Headway for theme design and wonder if that could affect speeds, but doubt it. Other Headway users would have the same problems.

Bluehost is moving data centers and there may be some issues related to that causing slow downs.

My sites are a little slow too.

I've never had any major problems with Bluehost though so I'm not too worried.

I just recieved an email yesterday that bluehost is moving all there servers and data centers to a new location.
If i remember right, they are all gong into there main office or headquarters so all of the programmers, software guys, gals, everything is going to be under one roof as to say for easibility and access for the company as a whole.

Here is part of my email.

      (quote)
      Dear Bluehost Customer,
Bluehost has completed construction on our new data center expansion, complete with advanced temperature control, custom server racks and dozens of improvements designed to help us provide you with higher quality service. We will be moving all customer servers into the new center over the next few weeks.

This expansion allows us to continue to manage all hardware alongside our Technical Support team and System Administrators, here in Provo, Utah. Our experience has shown that hands-on control over all aspects of your hosting is the best method of ensuring excellence. The Bluehost System Administrators will physically move your server (containing the hosting account: myxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx.com) into the new data center between 9 PM, March 24th and 5 AM March 25th (MDT), during low traffic periods. We will work to ensure you experience as little downtime as possible and, to that end, we will take the opportunity to perform any needed hardware maintenance or upgrades. We expect the process to take 1 to 3 hours.

These changes are a reflection of Bluehost's continued drive toward security, stability and reliability. If you have any questions, our world-class support representatives will be happy to help. Just call us anytime, toll-free at (888) 401-4678. (end quote)

Hope i can post this like this.

I use to be on Bluehost but I didn't like the service they provided. Forget Hostgator too.

I suggest inmotionhosting.com. Great reviews and professional customer service.

My sites with Bluehost have been down ALL DAY. Over 15 hours now. It's unreal. They said it was a hard drive. Now it's a RAM issue. No ETA on a fix.

Maybe it's just my server. When I login it's box37x in case that helps anyone else correlate their problem to mine.

Stuff does happen and in defense of BlueHost, I have found their customer service nothing but helpful and easy to work with.

Last weekend they took my account down because one of my larger sites was beating the snot out of their sql server. They do use cpu throttling but this site was just hammering the box.

I was a little ticked at first but I understand... it's shared hosting.

The guy I talked to brought my stuff back up and allowed me enough wiggle room to work on the site and set it up with some caching because the site has just started getting good traffic after the Panda Slap.

Originally I was going to upgrade my account but the second tech I talked to convinced me to save my money and try installing a caching plugin on my wordpress sites. How often do you have a phone jockey actually take a look at your stuff and save you money over just saying "Yeah, ok fine... let's upgrade your account"?

These guys were top notch and although I lost some money on Sunday from the sites being down my stuff is running better and I saved myself some coin thanks to those guys.

I have noticed that a little bit too actually.

I imagine that bluehost is in the process of expanding their bandwidth, server space, etc. to accommodate the fact that they are quickly becoming one of the most popular hosting sites out there.

Personally, I love Bluehost even when they are a little slow.

    Cheers,

This is reason I started to run my own servers and web hosting company for 10 years now. I lost a ton of money with Hostgator having same issue a while back ago.

I've heard complains for Hostgater and Godaddy too.. I have IX Webhosting and they worked great for a year but now I'm even having problems with them, slow loading and I dont know what the heck. I can't seem to figure out where to get my sites finally rested for a long time to come without facing any problems.

PS. I am seriously thinking of switching to Hostgator or something else...
It appears they probably have limited FTP speeds to discourage customers from uploading very large files.

I'm using hostgator, and I'm generally very happy with them.

There is this pesky issue about inodes though - and they don't normally alert you to that until you're over their limit...

About plugins-- I think I need to remove Hello Dolly from all my WP blogs. I'm not using it and I'm not even sure what it does.

Reducing the number of plugins will help in a big way. You might ask your webhost to look at your server and make sure nothing is wanky (techie term).

Installing and configuring a cache plugin like W3 also helps load times with Wordpress sites. I see a common mistake people make of just installing W3 but not configuring it; click on the Performance tab, Disable Preview mode and check off all but CDN. In most cases, that setting bundle will boost speeds significantly.

Some webhosts aren't friendly to W3, in which case you can try the SuperCache plugin or others.

Finally, have you looked at your custom permalinks settings? Wordpress runs most efficiently with a number prefix not a word prefix. For example, here are two examples of optimum permalinks settings in Wordpress -- /%post_id%/%postname%.html/ and /%post_id%/%postname%/

Before you change your permalinks - STOP - you first want to consider how many inbound links are coming to the site. If you change permalinks, you will need to do 301 redirects for all those URL's.

I hope these tips speed up your site.

Hostgator is good among other shared hosting providers. There is nothing like your own dedicated server though. Of course they are more than a shared account but you get what you pay for. I only pay $100/month for a very nice server with 100mbit port. You can get them for even cheaper. It also depends if you are just hosting 1 simple site or if you have many many sites and projects to host.

I host some important sites on Bluehost - including a forum - and they've been fine (knocking on wood right now).

I think I have some sort of emotional attachment to them b/c they were one of my first hosts and have always been v. good (unlike HG). I'd be pretty forgiving right now.

I have most of my web assets on Bluehost, a few on HostGator, and a handful of DotMobi sites on GoDaddy (since they are one of a few registrars) that will register and sell me my .mobi URLs.

My Bluehost server has been far and away the best performer but yeah, since they've been upgrading their data center, I've noticed a 'minor' lapse in performance - but not much.

Frank Kern uses Bluehost and does pretty well in the IM space, so for what its worth, a short term snafu in through put is OK by me...

It's normal for shared hosting plans, if you got a load of visitors, you'd better switch to VPS or dedicated server

Same thing for me. BlueHost has slowed down significantly and I am considering moving the sites to HostGator account. Not crazy about dealing with the hassle though.

I have a couple of WP installations on the account and don't think the plugins are the issue. It just seems like BlueHost slowed down lately. The loads on the server are low but the sites are just very sluggish. They take time to respond..

I create Joomla websites and have many hosted at Bluehost, as well as Rochen and others in Australia.

Bluehost has been brilliant for everything...but over the last week my sites are sooooo painful to work on as they are extremely slow - both the admin and the front end.

I can compare Joomla at Bluehost with the other servers I have sites...Rochen is still cruising. Australian servers are still cruising.

I have logged tickets with Bluehost after doing many tests, repairing and optimising data bases, checking trace routes and giving all my information to Bluehost. However I am asked 'what's the problem....there's nothing wrong'....yet all the sites slow down the second they get to Bluehost servers!

I'm at a loss now what to do. The speed of the admin is like working on an old Dos machine!

Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
