What sort of percentage of clicks can I expect from a sidebar ad? Or is it completely impossible to tell?

I ask because I recently noticed the strongest competitor in my Niche has Ad Space. The estimated amount of impressions over 30 days is: 1,444,000

I would like to have an idea of what percentage of hits I can expect before purchasing.

Well, if you have already tested your AD, you should have an idea of it's CTR.

If you have never advertised before, you won't be able to tell. All you will know for sure is the amount of times it will be seen (based on the impression stats).

If your AD sucks, no one will click it, if it is a strong closer, you will get a lot of clicks.

The best source of that information is the site owner where you're placing the ad.

Unfortunately, he has a relatively strong incentive to lie his arse off.

If I were you, I would purchase a relatively small number of clicks/impressions with an option to extend. See how fast you get them and how much conversion you manage. If you like the numbers, buy the extension.
