Is product creation in the MMO niche the only way to become rich in IM?

I'm just a newbie but it seems that the only method to become a millionaire in this industry is to build a huge list, and create the new "greatest thing since sliced bread" to all the marketers who play "business model musical chairs".

OK.... I'm done ranting but seriously,is anybody making any money outside of dating, MMO, and dieting. I know there are no secrets in IM, but it does seem like I was late to the party and my opportunity and potential to earn the huge money( 6,7,8 figures) is gone in the wind.

Like I said I'm ranting a little and I'm a little frustrated so please don't attack me for my opinions. Its just the way I feel right now. I just want to to make it soooooooo bad! I know that it starts and ends with me and my plans of action, but I don't want to waste my time doing things that will slow me down and prevent me from achieving my goal....becoming a multi-millionaire through IM.

Am I simply being too down and negative or is there indeed still room for the little guy to become a giant?

Do not mistake the people making the most noise for the people having the most success.

As usual Caliban is to the point - there are lots of niches like model railways and hobby sites, where the people making the real money do not crow about there success in fact they appear to be enthusiasts on forums. They are quietly making a mint. Don't believe me do a keyword research on quilting or model railways and see what turns up

Caliban, you bring up a crucial point that many people seem to be totally missing here. There are many people in the internet space that aren't even using their real names on their websites and are pretty much incognito (many aren't even selling their own products), yet they are silently raking in six or even seven figures a year. Do not mistakenly think that fame and notoriety are the only/primary indicators of success on the internet, they are definitely not prerequisites for making money here.

This is very true. There will be plenty of successful people online who are not the least bit interested in giving away their secrets nor would they want to deal with the hassle of customer care, customer contact, jv partners or any of these things - they're happy as they are.

The truth is that most of the MMO products are released by people who have followed some sort of guide and created a product - they don't practice what they preach.

You'll also notice that when you meet other marketers/business people you won't be able to tell who has money and who doesn't. Just because Mr. Smith turns up wearing an old shirt and dirty trousers doesn't mean he hasn't got a lot of money in his piggy bank.

      Anyway the point is...

Product creation is a good way to make money, but is not the only way. The reason why this game we play is so brilliant is that there are a million and one ways you can make moves

    Yeah I agree,

Most people who create products have to go through a lot of maintenance, while people who do their own thing such as website ranking don't have people screaming down their door asking for updates and solutions.

I think both worlds are equal, it depends on really you.

  • The industry has matured, in that yes, you are 10 years too late to 'get rich quick' overnight, from buying a domain name like business.com and reselling it for $1 million.

Being successful on the 'internet' is just like running a business in the 'real' world. You need a plan, sales force, marketing, etc, etc. Nowadays, you actually need to create a 'business' instead of flying by the seat of your pants.

If you are a one man show, it is like you have a paperroute, except on the internet. Sure, you can become rich delivering papers 24 hours a day, but there is only so much you can do within that 24 hours. If you leverage your time however, then you can do a lot more, and obtain the riches you seek.

Bingo!! That's the mistake too many "make money online" newcomers make.

Imagine walking through the mall and noticing that there's an empty store. So you rent it and open a book store. Then you hear that software is hot, so you throw out the books and stock the store with software. Then you hear dieting is even hotter, so you chuck the software and stock it with diet products. Pretty dumb. But that's what people do online. They hop from thing to thing, never sticking with one overall business concept long enough to make it work.

Here's the thing with "how to make money" products. A lot of people in the "make money" niche wouldn't be able to make any money if they weren't selling make money products.

When your prospects are half broke and living week to week, pay to pay, it's not that hard to sell them on the next big dream. All it takes is a few screencaps of clickbank or paypal. It's entirely different selling outside the IM niche. If you can sell outside the make money niche, then you can sell anything.

My top client is making over a million a year online selling a tangible product that retails under $40. (I do their marketing and seo)

Thing is, if you learn to sell, you can always make money. If you sell hype and promises and secrets and backdoors and all that other crap, you have to keep churning out new products when the methods go stale.

Having dreams of success is a good thing. Start outside IM and make money. Learn to really sell. Then if you want to sell "how to make money" products, at least you'll have real experience to base it on. Experience gives you staying power.

Just my opinion... but maybe food for thought.

Marketing to marketers is only a small part of what I do, more like a hobby that also helps me make contacts and stay up to date with fresh techniques. CPA is the real winner for me and AdSense on niche sites does pretty well also.

There's plenty of room for little guys to become giants
providing that those little guys have knowledge, skills, focus,
perseverance, rock solid plans and flawless execution.

If you hang around this forum all you hear about is people in
the MMO market but let me tell you the people who are really
killing it online wouldn't waste their time on this niche.

OK... here it is, the truth.

Those guys didn't get rich quick or overnight. They all put in years building up their businesses before they finally struck gold.

Eben Pagan didn't write Double Your Dating over the weekend and cash a million dollar check on Monday.

There was a lot of time and work put into developing images, brands, products, websites and lists.

Nobody takes into consideration the months and months, maybe even years of development time put into a Million Dollar Launch.

Love 'em or hate 'em, most of those guys payed their dues.

Just like McDonalds, they didn't serve billions on day one.

Those who claim differently are probably lying.

Do some products claim get rich quick, yeah, it's called marketing hype and feeding the dream. Nobody wants to buy a products that claims May make you rich after years of hard work.

Are there quicker ways to get rich online, maybe, all of the ones I've seen also require having a nice chunk of cash as an investment... those methods aren't going to work as well or quickly for a broke newbie. Go pay Kern 10k so he can teach you how to invest another 10k to make 100k, or something like that.

*I'm currently accepting investment capital so I can get rich quick too

Give it a couple of years. If you don't have the patience, this isn't the business for you.

And yes, list building and product creation can make you rich, or so I hear. So start working on your products and list.

I've only been in IM for 5 months now and I haven't made a sale as of yet. I have not been able to put as much time in as I would like because I am self employed and stay quite busy. However, I don't need a lot of experience in this industry to know that anything worthwhile in life takes hard work, discipline and commitment.

It may sound cliche or corny, but you can achieve anything you set your mind to, if you're willing to work hard, keep trying and learn from your mistakes and failures. These principles apply to everything in life, from relationships to education to personal pursuits and anything else in between.

Do your research, be aggressive and set goals. Then, work towards those goals and don't be afraid to fail.

You are putting the cart before the horse. And it will never be too late to make good income online. Start with one thing, get good at it, and then grow. You will find as you implement, other doors and paths will open before you that will compliment what you are doing, if you chose wisely.

If you want to create products, go to eBay, or ClickBank, or other such sites and see what the top 10 selling products are. Pick one you like, improve it and make it your own, and sell it. Run a WSO and offer it for a cheap price to build your email list.

Like someone above said, there are literally thousands of ways to make money online. I do both online and offline. I may never become a millionair, maybe I will. But one thing I know for sure, I will never be without an income.

Mark me down as someone who is making money online and marketing outside these niches. While I have yet to replace my 9 to 5 income I'm still enjoying plenty of extra cash per month--which was my goal to begin with.

I have sites and lists in all kinds of markets, from sports to women's fashion products all the way to nerdy things like action figures. There is PLENTY of money to be made outside of "evergreen" niches--especially during the "Holy 4th Quarter."

Think like a marketer you and will make money. Think like a cynic and you will fall by the wayside.

    Here's a suggestion.

Walk into a Barnes and Noble store, or even just visit Amazon's website.

Head into the magazine section. How many different topics do you see? Especially check for the groups with more than one magazine covering an area. How many of those do you see? Everyone of those is covering a profitable market. Very few of them are covering a money making market.

Now, walk away from the magazine rack. Head over to the Best Sellers table. Take a look on there and ask the same question. How many of those are about making money? Would you guess those authors are making a few dollars? Especially pay attention to best sellers in the Do It Yourself and Self-Help categories.

For your last step, head over to Zeitgeist on 43 Things Take a look at goals people are pursuing. This is a list of the most popular goals. How many of those are outside the MMO niche?

There is more money transacted online each and every day outside the MMO niche than inside the MMO niche by a great multitude. Your mind is stuck in the MMO niche because you are studying IM, and everyone is pitching you IM/MMO products. Step away from the noise and open your eyes.

There will be marketers and product creators out there that put some of the top MMO gurus to shame in the paycheck league. There's loads of hobby niches and obviously the weight loss/health & fitness markets which make people millions a year but as other posters have alluded to, it's not as if they just woke up and saw a million dollars in their clickbank account.

They probably failed an awful lot to begin with but kept going as their contemporaries simply gave up and got a job or whatever. It's a marathon, not a sprint.

yes for sure, my biggest money maker by a long shot is in the travel market. yes there are alot of people in the mmo market but that's because it is so profitable but there are just as many people in the travel market.

go to any bookstore or magazine rack, if it was only possible to make money in mmo there would be no other books or magazines on any other topic.

The key to getting rich online is traffic (in a "niche" that can be monetized)

I think about 6000 visitors per day is where you kind of need to be to get some real money rolling in.

How you get that traffic and how much it's going to cost you is another story altogether.

6000 visitors a day though should make you the kind of money you're looking for as a starter. Niche doesn't matter all that much

I also agree with the post above, travel is HUGE! just the keyword "southwest airlines" alone gets 5 million searches a month.

I feel your frustration, but be assured that there are literally 100s of profitable niches out there. You just have to find a system and apply it to as many niches as possible monetizing through various cps, cpl, cpas. Of course easier said than done.

If I hear you right, you're trying to win the marathon before learning how to walk!
Nothing is impossible online (or offline, if you ask me) but these kind of leaps (even in the imaginary level) will probably get you nowhere.
If I were you, I would constantly keep an eye on my dream, but I would start my journey with baby steps until my walking became stable and fast. Then I would start running...
The only road to success I know of, is doing what you love and enjoy every moment of the process. The journey is the real thing! Whether it is riches, fame, or anything else you are after, it won't mean a thing to you if you have no fun on the way.
Regarding timing, I feel that it's a perfect moment to enter the internet marketing scenery, as the internet is well established already, but it is still an infant.

The vast majority of people earning a living online have nothing to do with the MMO, dating, or dieting / weight loss markets. The products and services offered online are virtually endless.

Two friends of mine come to mind, one makes most of her online income baking specialty goods (think wedding cakes, anniversaries, birthdays, etc.), she has a retail store, but 95% of her business comes from online marketing.

Another friend of mine (who is a Warrior) is a programmer who makes money creating software. Sometimes he sells it to the public, sometimes he sells it to medium to large-sized corporations.

I think CDarklock summed it up the best at the beginning of this thread:

"Do not mistake the people making the most noise for the people having the most success."

Because for every "guru"-type marketer you hear or read about, there are at least a 1,000 others having the same success (or more) that you'll never hear about because they don't market to the MMO market and they're not in the news or they're not ex-governors having secret love affairs.

Even if you're selling MMO products does not guarantee that you will become rich because there are lots of things need to be considered. My best suggestion for you is to find your special niche/expertise where you can teach others as well. You can either write an ebook, video or start your own seminar/coaching. If you're passionate about something and try to sell it, the money will come eventually. Just my opinion.
