If Article Marketing Changed of Feb 24th, What Is The Way Forward for Article Marketers?

I don't want to hear about how EZA, Articles Base, Idea Marketers and the others might survive.

Let's pretend for the sake of this discussion the they all went out of business last month.

What is the road forward?

Referencing the movie Animal House. If you haven't seen it, rent it immediately (or go download it... I'm sure it's all over the Web). You have not really lived until you've seen that movie.

All of the article directories except EZA have always been irrelevant in my article marketing. EZA has some value but is relatively insignificant. And since all of my sites are in extremely highly competitive niches, they are hopelessly buried beyond 10,000 from the top, so even Google is out of my marketing model.

So, the road I've been traveling is article syndication to a combined total of 23,000+ targeted outlets such as ezines, blogs, websites, and offline publications. What this means is the potential of tens of millions of real live targeted eyeballs reading my articles.

While this model may not work for everyone, article marketing in its best form as syndication levels the playing field in highly competitive niches when writing just for backlinks and ranking bombs abysmally.

          Bill,
My road forward is the same road I've always been on and that's paid advertising. I prefer contractual obligations to publish my ad then some nameless, faceless 'agency's' pre-programmed algo driven decision of whether or not enough of their irrelevant factors deem my product to be of any value.

    tpw,

You're obviously one of the best article marketers in the business. My feeling is that generally speaking, Google specifies over and over and over again that they want content. I think the big mistake a lot of people make is that they think content is synonymous with articles. It can be but it isn't necessarily the only way.

    Great content can be:
    - Forum Posts
    - Videos
    - Blog Posts
    - Blog Comments
    - Software/Programs/Games
    - Audio
    - Documents
    - RSS Feeds
    - Press Releases
    - Photos
    - Social Media
    - and Yes, Articles
    - Not to mention other types of content both not mentioned and not even currently thought of...

I think there's a danger in thinking that IMers must "write articles". Google is very clear that they want great content. In order to get traffic to your site, you need to syndicate that content. There are numerous ways to go about it. Article marketing is a way that can work great but it's hardly the only way. I think it's just an easy place for many people to start.

Personally, I barely write articles for any of my niches (except on my site) because I don't find it fair return on value for time. The amount of direct traffic it gets I just don't find as fair value on the time (directly) or costs (outsourced) associated with creating great articles.

To each their own. However, having said that, if Google closed Ezine today, I could only think of 100 other ways to create and syndicate great content. I'm sure most people would adapt after eventually getting over the shock of it.

Mind sharing what you do that does provide fair value for time and or money?

I must confess my ignorance. I don’t know.

For me nothing has really changed. I’m having advantages with Google’s changes. I’m getting a lot of traffic from my articles. I’d like to learn more alternatives, though. Easy ones… and not time-consuming.

Well, if that is the case...The content will be posted on my blogs. Since Google love blogs so much, that is the best place for articles to be. Of coz, it can also be on someone elses blogs (guest blogging).

Articles can also be turned into videos....No EZA, no problem, just make a 1 - 2 min video and have it up at youtube.

It's a wonder nobody mentions document sharing sites more often.

    Isn't anybody using these?

This is just one of many other web properties that you can post your content on (and it doesn't need to be 'articles' per se). It seems like many people have "tunnel vision" and have focused too intensively on article directories to the exclusion of everything else (to their detriment).

People should never place all of their eggs in just one basket, no matter how much of a gold mine it may seem. It just isn't good business sense to do so, and hopefully with these latest Google updates people will learn their lesson, and try to be more diversified in how they get their traffic.

If all article directories went out of business,
then people can concentrate on just two things in their business..

        traffic + conversion.

Traffic can easily be be turned on, and as much as one wants.

Conversion methods and split testing becomes fun when you see
small changes creating big changes to your income.

One change in a buy button took a sales page from $2,000 to $5,000.

Imagine multiplying the same targeted traffic to that sales page now.

Multiply traffic + multiply conversion = a real business.

To multiply traffic, you buy it.

        Best,
        Ewen

It is interesting that you mention that, because I am seriously starting to look into it. It seems to offer a lot of potential to people, but I have not tested it beyond a single document on two sites. I will be exploring it more going forward.

Yes; I've been using them since I started.

Primarily for the backlinks, really, so it's never been exactly a "major concern" to me, because backlinking's never my priority. But the backlinks from them are clearly worth considerably more than article directory backlinks are worth (not that that's saying much, obviously - writing your url on a scrap of paper and throwing it in the trash is worth about the same as an article directory backlink.)

I find it VERY interesting that since this upheaval took place, I've been receiving more and more requests, mostly from my biggest competition, to contribute guest posts to my blogs. In each case I have responded positively, on the condition that they reciprocate and allow me a similar post. Previously, my requests to contribute a guest post had fallen on totally deaf ears, but now I have the leverage - you scratch my back and I'll scratch yours

    Hey tpw.

Believe it or not (well, you will believe it), I'm your big fan. The information you share is invaluable.

    Anyways, here's my theory.

When you submit an article to EZA, say, it's not the power of EZA alone that helps but also the (minor) power of hundreds or thousands of other websites where this article is syndicated to.

So, apparently, now, all we need to do is, create content in a more diverse format. (Shared by frankfihn)
