I'm so sick of the "gurus" and the crap they sell

Seriously, I think I've been on every mailing list of reputable marketers there is out there for the past two years... and now I open only 2-3 people's.

WHY? Because 99% of the CRAP that they sell is regurgitated hypothetical information. The information they state blatantly lies... and it dramatically affects the outcomes.

Some quick examples:

"I buy blog reviews at XXXX.com for only $0.50 per post". In reality: the cost is $1-3 and at that price you're getting spun english=>philo=>indian=>english junk. That or they'll just copy and paste a press release you've done.

"Here's a list of 950 pr 4-6 directories that will give you a free link" -- In reality: none of them are FREE, about 5% of them are free with reciprocal, and the rest are paid. 950 links at $10 a pop.... yeah right.

--
Somewhat unrelated, but on the same tangent:

The valuable lesson that I've learned: don't buy info products OR stuff sold on squeeze pages. If they have to hype up or give away "thousands" [in shat PLR products] the product/service to sell it, there's a reason for it.

i have learned that the best thing you can do is invest in yourself by learning as much as you can about certain ways of marketing online.

so many people are looking for one secret or one solution and never really learn marketing as a whole. they jump from one thing to another and never really get anywhere.

the sad part is that if many of these would be marketers spent the same amount of time actually working at something instead of chasing the next big product... they would actually make money.

learn marketing as a whole and then all the hype will be put into perspective and you will know what products you will need when you need them rather than following the latest greatest hype pitch.

hype sells because sadly people want to believe it.

What you should've learned is "pick your "guru's" wisely"....

Squeeze pages and/or the delivery method (info/digital products) have nothing to do with quality. It has to do with the type person is behind the product.

I've bought EXCELLENT products from a big launch/squeeze page. I've also bought shyt from squeeze pages. You just need to weigh the odds of cost vs. reward.

How does this thread help anyone?

What would you suggest as an alternative?

Instead of going off on a rant, how about posting
    a positive alternative.

The best way of changing this industry for the better
is by setting a great example, not by whining about
    other people.

I agree with you, John, but in today's world venting is almost required to maintain your sanity. The problem is where and how you do it. There are too many crazies out there to take the risk. To paraphrase what someone entioned in another thread recently, it takes a long time and lot of hard work to develop a reputation, but you can completely blow it in an instant.

If you channel this into a running text file on your hard drive, not only do you avoid immediate consequences for losing control, you can actual learn from it. I'm thinking WSO. Beats the hell out of all the alternatives.

I agree with John. There is so much crap out there, you'd be whining all day long and not getting anything done at all.

As has been mentioned, but bears repeating... Education, personal education (yours) is the most important thing you can do to combat the garbage out there.

"A big name and huge response to a launch does not a good product make." I can think of more than a few of the so called gurus that I wouldn't believe anything they say, because of the methods they use and the products I've seen from them. My education wasn't quick, nor was it cheap.

So how do they get such big sales for such poor products? Immense lists, and "serial purchasers". A serial purchaser is one that will buy the next product, even when the last one didn't work, in the hope that the new hype is actually true...

The truth is, there really ARE some great products and vendors out there, but sometimes it is difficult to figure out who they are without buying some of the crap from the bad guys along the way. [sigh]

I think we are all sick of the hype and jive that some marketers use to sell poor products, and the fact that there are other marketers with good products that think they need to use similar tactics to make sales, which further confuses the issue, but it is what we have to deal with right now. Perhaps someday it will settle down and we will see more rational and truthful marketing claims.

On the other hand, looking back in history, there have always been con men and "snake oil salesmen" that tainted the markting arena, and given human nature, there probably always will be. You just have to examine the copy, and ask yourself: "Is this too good to be true?" If it is, it is probably a poor product being sold under the guise of an emotional appeal... Making money selling anything takes work and effort, and anyone promising otherwise should probably be looked at with suspicion.

I like to mark them as spam. That way I can occasionally go to my spam folder and read some of the junk they send me. It puts a smug, but knowing, smile on my face.

You sign up to their lists voluntarily but then mark them as spam if you don't like the content?

How does that put a smile on your face?

Is the 'unsubscribe' link too difficult for you?

One day we'll invent software that can slap people over the internet.

It would require some type of hardware device to be connected to the other person's computer. I think the device is called a USB pimp hand.

I think it's better if you don't follow any gurus. This way you get things done, not confused and overwhelmed.

    ...and you make money

There's a simple solution to the problem...

People who BUY things on the internet are NOT internet marketers. But many of them think they are.

It's only when you SELL on the internet are you ever going to acheive success as an internet marketer.

So the solution is to become a SELLER, and not a BUYER of things. (Unless you buy them with the sole purpose of reselling them such as an ecommerce store would, of course.)

If you're inviting people to sell you stuff it's a self-inflicted wound to complain about it.

People that are actively engaged in making money on the internet never seem to have the time to complain about guru crap. I wonder why that is...

  • I would not say 99% of marketers or products are scams. But I would say that a large percentage of the products out there are crap and you must be very selective in what you buy or use for informational purposes.

And people must become aware to take any hyped headline or sell page with caution. Who cares if Billy Bob made $24000 per day. The only thing that means to you...if true...is that Billy Bob knows how to make money online. It does not mean you will make the same amount. In fact, the majority of marketers online will never earn a dime or will earn extremely small amounts. That is just a fact.

If you want to earn money online, it will take time and lots of knowledge and skills. You need to be able to research the right keywords, the right products to promote and get lots of traffic to your site through a variety of means. If you are using organic searches and you are on page 100, get those backlinks going. And don't forget using edu/gov links as well.
