How to Pitch Wordpress to a Customer

I have an interesting issue that I think that someone here may be able to assist with.

I may be doing marketing for a company but while talking i discovered that in order to switch the company will have to end their current agreement with a firm who also happens to be the website designer/web hoster as well... fml..

Not to worry... I can host sites easy enough, i can market too (Somewhat, social media mostly) and I did programming in college (Not HTML or CSS unfortunately) so while i am positive i can design a site from scratch... i would really rather not... and i think wordpress kicks ass, is easy to use, and gives an amazing looking site easily.

As for what im not... a salesman....

SO my question is... how do i walk into a business meeting and tell them that having a site designed on the wordpress CMS would be better than, say, having it custom designed.

I'm not too sure it is better myself as:
a) Security Wise it will need to be maintained and updated constantly
b) if there is a core change that messes up the template that will hurt as well

Currently the only pros i've come up with is:
1) Way more cost effective
2) Less than half the time to design the site
3) Beautiful template/theme (and also explain how to custom design an equivalent theme would cost them an arm and a leg)

What i would like is some really really good Pro's to go against those Cons that would have these guys saying "You know what, we are moving today!"

Any and All Help is appreciated.

I'm not sure I understand. What are you doing that they would have to switch web hosting?

Secondly, unless it is a web service company I would not go into the details of how you do your thing. Local business people don't care about CSS, HTML, MySQL, etc. They want results. More on this later if needed.

Come up with an answer to the first question and we can go from there.

They currently use one company for "Web Solution", so they do hosting, web design, and marketing in one big package for them. They are dis satisfied with the quality of work that the company is providing and the attention that they are receiving since the we solution company grew so they are looking to break the contract and just move to a different company completely.

So its not me doing anything exactly its them saying "We would love it if you could do all of this for us too" I guess they just like the idea of having one person to call for everything web related

Seeing this as a pretty good opportunity to make additional income of course i said "you know what, i could definitely do all that too." without giving it much though (Show me money i agree and think about it later)

From the hosting standpoint its fine, and the marketing wont really be a problem, absolutely worst case if they want more than i can currently provide thats what a forum of marketers is for right? The only thing that got me was he really seemed excited when he went into detail about how he had that website custom made and went off on a tangent about the whole process they went through working it on etc.

There is no e-commerce on the website, it has potential to blog but it will be a mostly static website. Messing around with wordpress for quite some time i'm fairly certain i can design a site that looks better and operates the same as the one they currently have (I mean they had 5 designers and there are like, what, a million wordpress template designers out there).

But i have to go pitch the entire solution to him this Friday, and i basically want to go in there, and i want to basically explain to him why the wordpress framework is so much better than a custom site. Mostly i want him to bite the wordpress apple so that i can design instead of have to outsource the web designing too.

So here i am creating a powerpoint and getting some Pro's and Con's up (trying to do the whole professional thing) and im at the web design page and mentioning the wordpress engine in the backend of the site... really want to sell it to him... and im thinking.. what are some heavy hitting Pro's for this thing.

Now that i look at it, the fact im going to be managing the site as well means we can take out the security cons as i will be updating it and turn that into a Pro, and of course i will completely not mention the core change messing up the template and buy a template from a designing company that, should the worst happen, i can go to them and have them update the code.

But i would love to have some solid wordpress Pro's that will completely knock them off their feet.

Since the post i've googled and found that it has SEO benefits, as well as a static seamless look and feel. He has no idea what SEO really is but he heard about it and said "You know i would like some basic SEO too"

I think those two and the ones mentioned early makes some pretty good Pro's but i am still open to a real dealmaker or something that i should be aware of going in there. I really hate it when someone throws something at you that you are completely unprepared for.

Reading your post though i think you're absolutely right though and im only driving myself up the wall for no reason. By custom he probably didnt mean i need to open up photoshop and create a template for him, he probably wouldnt care if i bought the template custom rights from template monster and he is probably only interested in results and wordpress can give quality and speed.

Okay. A little bit more information here. Good.

Does your client like his web site? If he's just unhappy with the service, and he paid for a custom site, you may be able to move it for him.

My initial thinking on this is that you are concerned about pushing your ideas and he may be making it a bit easier for you. But I'm not in the trenches, you are.

I'd like to hear others on this.

If they already have a site and it is working, why switch it? If they need to switch hosts, that is one thing, but if the site has already been designed and completed, just keep it.

Now if the site is not working well and needs some serious improvement, then I can see why they want to make a switch.

I too think that you you really don't need to mention Wordpress unless they know about it and want it. Most business owners don't know about this stuff and don't care, they just want something that works and that gets results.

See this is my first company that i'm actually going to pitch an idea for and first time im going to offer to do a full web solution... Is it ok to not even mention wordpress to them?

I think i'm taking it from an angle where, i want to tell them exactly how i plan on doing everything, then do it. I can see how it would cut profit if they research it and find out its "easy to build" so that may hurt more than it helps...

I think i'm just going to take the wordpress out of the presentation and just call it a Custom Website Design and not even mention it to begin with. Thanks guys

Totally okay not to mention WP. You can even mention it without mentioning it.

"How do you plan on implementing this Mr. Smith?"
"There are several, very good packages available. We can customize them to add your designs. Etc."

No! Have bullet points on the results he'll get. Leave yourself with as much flexibility as possible. Impress them with end results, not with your knowledge.

You're way over-thinking this. If they are already liking you, they are not doing research.
