Default At what point does it become SPAM?

I have a book that I would like defense attorneys to recommend to their clients. If I email the attorneys and offer them a free copy of my book, is that SPAM? Or does it all depend on how many people I email?

If it's an unsolicited marketing message then it's spam, how many you send has nothing to do with it.

Sounds like a case for good old fashioned snail mail, to solicit their permission!

Okay, I guess I will need to start by sending 100 letters or so and see if I have any takers.

If it were you, would you send the book itself unsolicited or would you send a letter asking them to go to URL x to enter their email and receive the free book?

Why not buy an ad in a bar association newsletter or magazine, and those that are interested can clip off the order form for the free book?

Spam is a mail sent for marketing purposes from unknown user or un-recognizable users. They sent this to eat more of your space and kill your time. There is a huge difference between spam mail and mass mailing.. So don't worry about yours. You are doing it right

IMHO 1 unsolicited email is SPAM. In the UK the legality of it depends upon whether you are sending to an individual or a corporate subscriber. According to the ICO site (cant post links as I'm new), you don't need prior consent to mail a corporate subscriber.

I suspect that your target audience will be able able to offer further advice.

spam is not bad or illegal, it's just that when you spam you need to follow some guidelines

can spam doesn't say you can send "spam email" just that when you do you need to follow some requirements

The CAN-SPAM Act: Requirements for Commercial Emailers

so fire away the emails, just follow the requirements properly

I would ask their permission before sending anything. If you have something you need to ask anyway by email why not put a P.S. at the end of the email asking if they would like to get a copy.
