Follow the passion or the money?

If you were starting out in IM again would you follow your passion (niche) or go for where the money is?

I would select a niche that I'm passionate about.

Just make sure that in that niche people spend money.

My passion is internet marketing and self development.

I think I am in these two different niches at the same time and it is, because you have to know a lot of different things such as how to set your goals, how to manage your time effectively to make a lot of money online.

If I wouldn't be passionate I think I couldn't make that much money, or maybe even I wouldn't make any money at all...

However, choose a niche from big market, not from small, because if you're in big market it is way more easier to generate a lot of traffic to your site

I think you have to be realistic, you have bills to pay, but if you can have your bill payer and your passion on the side building up, then maybe eventually the passion can be the bill payer and then your in a win win situation.

    Go for both.

Why settle for one when you can follow your passion and
    go for the money too?

I'd follow both. I would never do this if I wasn't feeling like I was following both a passion and an income source. I have things in my life that I do for passion... but not money... and I have things I do for money.. and not entirely passion.

I figure if I can combined them thoroughly, then I'll never have to work another day in my life, so to speak.

Try creating content for a topic you couldn't care less about... you'll want to shoot yourself.

I made this mistake with one of my niche sites. It got slapped by google and I got to lazy too bring it back up.

Making money from something you enjoy doing is great, however sometimes when you try to turn your passion into a money making venture it ends up becoming drudgery - something you "have to do" instead of something you "want to do".

    Just food for thought.

It can be incredibly misleading to tell people to simply follow their passion and the money will flow. I'm pretty sure I can't build a business blogging about how much I love my boyfriend, for example. (If you guys can figure out a way, tell me!!)

To be in business you still have to find people who want to pay for what you are offering. The best thing is to find an intersection between something you enjoy and something that will help you eat.

Err -- well, you know, there's lots who would pay to watch some of that. Pictures, they want pictures. And videos.

      LOL.

Kidding aside - yes, there is some level of logical thinking required to figure out how to monetize a passion or interest for those who want to like their work.

If you don't care if you "have passion" for your work, sufficient income can create incentive to develop a working interest in a profitable niche, too.

      It's all opinion, really.

      Not necessarily.

More accurately, if you follow your passion the money
      may follow.

If I'm passionate about tiddlywinks, it doesn't necessarily
follow that the money will follow if I want to use my skills
to build an information business in that area.

You need to choose a market that meets pragmatic
criteria such as... it's big enough and the people in
it actually spend money regularly on the type of
products or services you want to offer.

If you're passionate about the area that's a bonus.

This is certainly something to watch out for.

Not everyone is suited to pursuing a passion-led business.

That said, why someone would choose to spend their life
building a passion-less doesn't make much sense to me -
but I know that most people do that. Different strokes
      for different folks I guess.

What about enjoying the journey along the way by building
a business that gives you passion and freedom?

There are no certainties in life - and any one of us could
get hit by the proverbial bus tomorrow.

I'd prefer to get knocked over doing what I love.

Follow the money. Passion can be outsourced. There are several dozen hot and extremely lucrative niches of which I have no real interest in personally, but making huge profits. It's not necessarily all about you or fulfilling your passion; it's about finding a need and fulfilling the hungry market.

I recommend being really passionate about Internet Marketing.

Being passionate about a niche helps tremendously but if your life passion is something like building rockets with origami that wouldn't be very profitable.

If you are not a poser, and you are truly passionate... others on your wavelength will be inspired by it as well and you will succeed.

Truth, conviction, passion sell... Sell what you know, because alot of people will come against you, and you have to know your subject matter like the back of your hand or they will eat you alive in the first round.

Sell what you LOVE... so its easy to talk about , because you will be doing alot of that.

    Good luck.

I would select, as I did, a niche I"m passionate about. You have more energy doing something you love, which you need to learn the skills necessary to make money. Not to say you can't add an IM niche once you have some skill - but at least you're jumping into the shark tank with a few skills.

Follow your passion. My passion is not a home based business. My passion is the freedom and benefits that come with a successful home business.

If you follow your passion, the money will follow. If you are in this only for the money, it will take you longer to make money.

However, with that being said, I wouldn't waste my time and efforts on something that doesn't have a high income potential.

So: Passion first, money second. If you follow your passion, what you do will not feel like work to you and success will come faster.

When you take an offline job, you don't necessarily have to have a passion for the work you do in order to bring home a paycheck.

Online is different. There's no boss or supervisor telling you what to do or giving you motivation to do the job. Therefore, if you want to succeed in making good money online, you need to do something that you have an interest in.

Motivation is key here. If you choose to do an online promotion, but dislike the process, you're not really going to be motivated to continue. So, just doing something online for the money, isn't enough to create a viable business - unless you're one of those types who will sell their own grandmother for a few bucks.

I think you have to have a little interest or passion for something to keep motivated, because making decent money this way is not going to happen overnight.

Ask yourself.. are you doing this as a hobby or as a way to make money and support yourself and your family?

If you're here JUST as a hobby, then follow your passion, have fun and make a little money along the way.

If you're here to start a BUSINESS, then don't let your emotions get in the way.. make business decisions that will put more money in your pocket.

I started with the business mentality, and I'm not coming into the IM niche because it's a passion of mine.. I'm having a lot more fun creating products for the IM niche than I have in any other niche.

Before I made money online and had proven it to myself that I could do it again and again, I never would have imagined entering this niche though, although I've always had a passion for it.

If you choose passion, you need to be sure your passion is also in line with what others will pay you for if you want to make money at it.

Example...In my town a woman wanted to own a restaurant. Passionately.

So she bought a location she thought would be good, had the old building torn down, erected a brand new building on the site that was the exact duplicate of the building she had torn down, but made it three times as big as the old one. Yea, I know what you're thinking, that's the same thought we all had...

Anyway, her passion was to have this restaurant. To build it, to own it, to be a real restaurateur. But only on her terms.

So as construction was underway she created a website and documented with much pride all the activity and progress that was going on with her new restaurant. Pictures, stories, the whole nine yards.

      There was just one problem...

When looking at her website, which was now the public face for her new venture it was obvious something was missing. That missing ingredient, unfortunately, was what was in it for her customers once the place was open for business. It was clear from the outset that her idea of owning a restaurant stopped at the physical building itself.

The website was all about her, her dream, and her building.

So when the time came for her to open up her new restaurant she did what a lot of people who are passionate about their dreams do...she sat back and bathed in the glory of her new building.

She didn't put up a "Grand Opening" sign. She didn't use press releases, or any form of marketing to let folks know she was now open. She must have figured we all watched her build it and knew it was there, so naturally we'd all come in droves.

      And that didn't happen.

      But here's what did happen...

The few folks that did eventually try her out generally went away with a feeling of disgust. The food was bland but overpriced, the service sucked, and the reputation of her new restaurant instantly tanked.

      What went wrong?

Well, in a nutshell, her passion for owning a restaurant did not coincide with what the market's expectaions were.

Her idea of owning a restaurant was wrapped up in the building itself.

Not the customers, not the notion of serving the community, and certainly not in overdelivering on the experience. In short, the customers were just an after thought and apparently were never a focus to start with, just a pain in the ass that had to be dealt with.

So is there a lesson here? Perhaps...

If you truly believe that if you follow your passion then money will also be a natural part of the equation you could be fooling yourself. Dramatically.

The important lesson is to realize that you, your dreams, your aspirations mean nothing to the public at large. They will trade you dollars for things that improve their lives. Period.

Passion has it's place, that's for sure. And if you can align your passions with things that your market is hungry for, and will pay for, and you can deliver those things from a customer centric perspective, meaning your focus is on your customers, you may succeed.

Or you can build a fancy restaurant to satisfy your ego and go broke. Passionately broke.

If you are just starting in IM, my take would be to "LEARN before EARN". With that said, it would make sense to follow your passion. Do something you enjoy to learn how to do keyword research; how to SEO your page to #1 in Google; how to create a list; etc etc.

If you can turn you passion into a well developed website, you can turn anything into one. So, make the learning process a joy. Don't worry about profit in the learning phase. Monetize your site, but don't focus on making money.

A combination of the two. Passion projects are fun and I do think the money comes in time, but that doesn't help any of us quit our day jobs.

Money makes things easier and other niche's available. A subscription to a number of private blog networks and outsourcers can easily run $250+ and up to 1k or more. For some people, that isn't realistic until they have revenue coming in on a regular basis.

Passion for me. It turns out my passions are in markets where there is money. I agree, if there is no money in the passion, then I probably wouldn't choose it.

I tried niches for the money and simply couldn't get into it. I didn't have the drive to really dig in and learn it deeply. This of course resulted in not very good results.

Based on 7+ years of IM experience, definitely go where your passion is. I used to be full-time in a niche I had next to no interest in anymore and it felt like a chore to work on it towards the end. If you can find a way to monetize your passion, there is nothing better because the time you spend developing products and promoting them doesn't feel like work... it actually feels like fun!

    Hope that helps,
