OK,i did a search and can not find my answer.
I would like to know how to add a link to my policy pages.

I either want to put them in the footer,or the sidebar.
I tried by putting in the text widget in the footer, but the all of the text showed up and not just the link.

I just want the high lighted word showing as a link.
So on all my pages,it shows a link.

Did you put it with HTML code?
Maybe you should edit the theme to add the link.
And what's te detailed of the link and your site?

I dont know how to edit the theme.
      Unless someone tells me.

How do i put it in code?
What i want to do i have seen on a few sites, and i am waiting for the people to answer me if they even will.

I have seen the privacy policy, contact, ect on the right and left side in the sidebar, but with just the highlighted link.
We have all seen them in the footer.
I tried to put mine in the footer with the text widget, but when i clicked on my site, the whole amount of text showed, not the link.

Thats what i am trying to achieve.Right now i am trying the easy theme out.
Maybe the theme is no good for this.I have 2 other wp sites but i have the website info pages at the top in the nav bar.I dont want them there anymore.

I am searching youtube right now to try and find an answer also.
I have 4 to 6 ebooks on WP from various people and none of them have any answers in there either.

I have even looked at Itans items and still can not find what i need.

I don't know which theme you're using, so this is generic, but hope it helps.

        1) Log into wordpress.
        2) In the sidebar, click Appearance --> Editor
        3) Then when the files load, click footer.php

You should be able to put the links right into the footer file unless you have an odd theme that I'm not familiar with.

You should use HTML code, not just the link.
For example, if you want to put the link: http://www.yoursite.com into the footer.
You should transform to HTML code: <a href="http://www.yoursite.com">http://www.yoursite.com</a>

And you add some attributes to it, like "title", "target"

Thats the problem i have.I dont have a link yet.
The websites privacy, policy pages need somewhere to go before i can make a link.

I think what i need to do is create the pages in a post.
Then put the post in a category.Call my category something like Website Info Pages.
    Or website term pages.

    Here is what you do.

Go to the Pages section and create a New Page with the name "Privacy Policy". You can either add your policy now or leave it until later. Click Publish.

Go to Widgets and in the Text widget add this: <a href="http://www.yourdomain.com/privacy-policy/" >Privacy Policy</a>. Click Save.

    Test the link.

Without any way of knowing what your theme is actually capable of and suspecting that your knowledge of the underlying code involved in a WordPress template is minimal, mikescos most certainly gave you the best path forward. Though it will depend on where your them makes "sidebars" (That name really doesn't work well anymore) and which one you put your text widget in as to where on the page your link will appear.

Did you ever notice that “author” is the root of the word “authority“?

    Thanks to all that replied.
@ Mike, doing it your way wouldn't the page show up in the top nav bar?
I may have to try it.I did not want them in the top bar.I only wanted my home page, contact, and my main keywords.

What i did was a variation of Mikes.
I put in a Category called Website Information.

Then i made 3 posts called:
    Privacy Policy
    Website terms
    Disclaimer and Earnings

Then after this i put in my text and on the right side of my form i check marked wich category i wanted it in.This way they are all in 1 place in my right sidebar.
They are not in my top nav bar so my main keywords will be there for seo.

They are also highlighted with just the phrase. Also when the page opens it just has the first few sentences, then it says to read more, click here. This way the page loads faster.

It was actually Mikes suggestion that got my juices flowing.
It has taken me 3 nights to figure this simple thing out.
Plus,i am still on a dial up and trying to watch videos is like trying to watch grass grow.
    About as much fun too.

I personally recommend that you create a new page for every section you want to have listed on your site. The reason for this, is Google looks highly upon sites that have Privacy Policy, About, Contact, Disclaimer and Earnings, and Terms of Use pages all separately and you will rank higher if you do.
Take a look at my site as an example: Full Body Workout Routine

That's exactly what i wanted to do.
      I looked at your site.
      What theme are you using.
I see the links all the way at the top above the header. And you have a home page in what i am calling the nav bar.

Here is mine i just put up.I put the links over in the sidebar.
I am going to put the ar code in the top so its above the fold. This will drop my page links down a little.

I used the category widget, and then added my posts to it.
But i fully understand how you did yours,or how you explained it to me.

Doing it the way you have is fine, but if I were you instead of using the Category widget, why not just use the Pages widget?! The reason I keep saying to use Pages is that Google absolutely loves having everything on its own page instead of categories. It will help with your ranking and eventually sales.

I am using the Black Shade theme.

OK,now i get what you mean.
The way i have it now,it is just 1 category, but has a seperate page for each post.
    Maybe i said it wrong.
I have to change another site so i will do it your way on my other site and see if it looks any different in my search engine tool.

Ill go look for the theme.
    Thanks.

    1. Without knowing what theme you are using... it is difficult to tell whether your attempts (like putting a widget in the footer) could ever be successful. If your theme doesn't have a widgetized area in the footer section - that will not work.

    2. Leaving aside the option that in the footer.php template there is an area for widgets, here is what I'd do in general. And this should work with every theme!

    a) Create a Page (NOT POST!) in your WP - call it "Legal". No content needed to go into it - although we will address that later! Write down the ID # of it...

    b) Create all your "legal" Pages, like Privacy, Disclaimer, Terms etc. as child- or sub-Pages of the Page titled Legal. When creating or editing a Page on the right side you have the option to select a "parent" Page. Select for all of them "legal" as parent!

    c) If you have a top horizontal menu in your theme which is based on listing Pages (as 99% of themes have) - open the header.php template file on your computer for editing - NEVER use the online theme editor!

    d) After making a backup copy of the header.php file, look for a line that has this:
    <?php wp_list_pages( $args ); ?>
Instead of "$args" you should have there real "arguments" that help fine-tuning the functions of this template tag - you can read about them by clicking the Codex link I gave it here.

    e) Add a new argument 'exclude_tree=X'
where X would be the ID# of your main parent (Legal).
It will exclude from listing your Legal Page and all its children.
So, if your template tag was like
    <?php wp_list_pages('sort_column=menu_order'); ?>
    change it to:
    <?php wp_list_pages('sort_column=menu_order&exclude_tree =X'); ?>

    f) Now you can add links (<a href="<?php bloginfo('url'); ?>/your-children-page-slug">Page Title</a>) manually to your footer... or into a text widget in the footer, if widgets are enabled for the footer. You will need to add a link for each child!

    g) For advanced users: use the child pages listing code given at the link I posted above

    h) Also, if you want to list - automatically - the children Pages of Legal in the footer or on the Page titled Legal... there are good code snippets to do it; just check out the Codex page above. This method has the advantage of adding the new links to the footer automatically, when you create a new child of Legal.

    i) finally, for both the footer and the Legal page you can create a list class and style it - using the stylesheet - in any way you want!

The reason I like to do it in this way:
    - the less plugins the better
    - all the code is given, you just need to copy/paste
    - you have ultimate control
    - once your learned it can be applied to any theme

    Hi PcPupil & All,

I just came across a great WP professional organization that has a free membership level. They have a full-time, 24/7, "live person" help desk to answer WP questions. Here is a link to the WordPress Users Association: Go To: http://www.WPUA.org

    Hope that's helpful to all.

Maybe I am wrong but for me the term "professional organization" implies something like a self-regulatory body of a profession (e.g. the Law Society of Upper Canada, for lawyers around here).

The link given above is BUSINESS. It was created to make money - and there is nothing wrong with that... just call it a business :p

        Istvan,

Well, you are technically correct. But I wasn't using the term "professional" to imply that it is an organization that is involved with one of the original 5 professions.

Rather I meant it to mean that they have a "professional" manner and website devoted to helping users of WordPress.

For sure, they are in business... but so are we. However, they do have a free membership and give the same level of professional service to free members as they do premium corporate members.
